What are the calibers of them?
Top to bottom, 44 mag, 45-70, 45-70, 22 mag
A few here:
Marlin 1895 .45-70. My husband's favorite centerfire caliber and rifle.
Marlin 1895 Guide Gun .450 Marlin. One my husband picked up cheap along with 5 boxes of ammo since the original buyer fired it a few times and decided it was a bit much on recoil. A few shots with it was enough for me to agree.
Henry .357 Magnum. A gift to me from another forum I frequent.
There are also a Marlin 39 and a Savage Model 99 in .250-3000 that goes back and forth between my Brother and me depending on who may be hunting something last.

Thinking of a lever for home defense. Henry vs Marlin? Why? What caliber?
Here are the lever guns I have at the moment. The Winchester was a rifle my mom hunted with. It dates back to 1918. The Marlin 39A and the 35 Remington were my dads. One for squirrel hunting and one for deer hunting. The rest are ones I have picked up along the way.

It has been 10-12 since I handled a Henry, it seemed to cycle smother than my Marlins, but still seemed cheap. Personally I would go for a Marlin, a 1894 in .357 or .44mag would be fine. I have never shot a Marlin in .357, but have a long barrel "cowboy" model in .44 mag and believe me the .44 is a different animal in a rifle vs a pistol. Nothing wrong with a .30-30 or a .35 Rem either. I actually have my dad's old 336sc in .35 Rem and load it with cast bullets down to hot 38 special, light .357 mag loads and recoil is almost nothing.
Don't get me wrong as you can see I like Lever Rifles. Do you really want a gun that requires two hands to operate and in close quarters? How can you hold a light, help get your kid or wife to safety or what if one arm is hurt. That will put you out of the fight.
For home defense I want a gun I gun shoot one handed and operate in close quarters. JMHO My 1911 and M1 Carbine works for me.
