45 Colt throat reamer

I also realize I need a T-handle and I assume one of the TAP handles I already have at home will work. So, I set out to look for an overview and found this page from our friends at Gunblast:

So, it cost me $135.25 but I have somewhere north of a dozen 45 Colts in my growing collection and I have a fettish for tools. I'll share how well it works when I get them and finally have some time to do it...

I have a good set of the reamers & such,, just not the pilots,,,,,, yet,,,,! Those will be one of my next purchases.

This info is worth what you paid for it, but I've learned that when using these reamers to cut the head off an empty (un-primed) 45 Colt case. The case will be too small for the reamer to enter so you must ream it out. Then trim to length so it butts up against the correct pilot. The pilots that come with the kit are short and will slide down to the throat while reaming and will not protect the rear most portion of the chamber. The cut off case eliminates damage to the chamber when reaming as the reamer can wobble ever so slightly when doing it by hand.
I've tried it and it works much better than using the supplied pilots alone.

Thanks, I will try that when I get it. I may need to hunt you down when I get ready to do it to make sure I understand you right but I have plenty of brass... time is the limiting thing anymore...

I send mine out to Ordering Gun Service to be reamed on a press with water and lube...

I got the tools but everybody has been sick here so I am not sure when I can get a chance to really study how to use these but I will get to it soon enough. I just need to work up the guts to do my 45 Colt Bisley Hunter by hacking on some of my cheaper 45s first :wink:

You might want to consider making it a hobby business. There's a few people doing it and there may be a lot more room in the field shortly.

I get it now. Thanks cas. I am one of those people that does much better with pics and instructions. But I am definitely going to give it a try I enjoy my .45's too much. So I would like to get the most out of them. Cas I really don't know how you have been able to put up with people while you have been doing your hobby business you definitely have my respect
