This maybe should be in the reloading section but it is Ruger Redhawk specific so here goes.

The cylinders on the Redhawk are much deeper than 1.610" so why limit the OAL of the load to 1.610"? Does anyone load the Redhawk with a greater OAL and if so, what were your results?

Yep, I often use a greater oal in my Redhawk. The Hornady 300 gr XTP has two cannelures. I've loaded that bullet to the lower cannelure and if I'm reading my notes right that resulted in a 1.730 oal. I used 15.0 gr of 2400 and it ended up being the most accurate load I've tried to date in that gun.

I load mine on the long side from what I can remember they are around 1.700 O.A.L. this is going off a bad memory though. The max load of 2400 with the 300 gr, Hornaday does not kick that bad at all.

It seemed logical to me that as long as you were crimping somewhere on the cannelure and the round fit inside the chamber you would be good to go but wanted to hear from others with experience. Thanks.

The garrett 44 mag 330 hammerheads for the ruger redhawk are 1.77" OAL if i correctly recall a conversation I had with Mr. Garrett.

just to add a little bit here for reference.

A ~250 grain Keith bullet in a 44 mag case has an OAL of 1.71". and those fit fine in a SBH/BH.

Buffalo Bore's heaviest .44 load has a 340 gr bullet and measres 1.764.The Redhawk is one of the guns recommended for it.

The Redhawk has a lot of room for long cartridges. I have used 1.73" OAL and had plenty of room left over.
