Here's my personal interpretation of The Ultimate Carry Semiauto and The Ultimate Carry Revolver, circa 1986: Homebuilt LW/Stainless Commander in .45ACP, and 3" S&W M66 in .357.

Notice that the two are nearly identical in overall length and overall height.

The Commander is quite a bit lighter, and thinner, too. Also holds two more rounds.

The Smith is (at least theoretically) more powerful with full loads. Also produces more recoil, and WAY more muzzle blast.

The Smith is harder to shoot DA with full loads. SA and with mild .38s, it's much easier to shoot than the Commander.

Both fit my hand about equally well.

Which do I like better? That's easy: I love them both.

I had a 640 for years, but found that shooting 357's was more than uncomfortable for me. When I bought a 642 I recognized that the 640 would likely never come out of the safe so I sold it. While my EDC is my LC9s, the 642 is what I grab when just running out of the house for a quick errand, or when I am riding my motorcycle. 5 rounds is just fine.

Thank for pointing that out. My 642 is my ez go to gun too. I don't mind 357 out of my old 4" Trooper but as you point out might be a little excessive in a light 2".

Snubby enough. I have an identical 60. Not sure if it's the same dash number. I still haven't gotten an SP-101 even though I've wanted one since they first came out. I came close the other day, but decided that a Kimber K6S was the next one I needed.

Why have a snubby when you can have a 3"er. People think of the difference as 1". I prefer to think of them as 50% longer. Longer barrel, longer sight radius.
I like the three inch guns too. The only advantage I see is appendix carry IWB is more comfortable with <3" guns.

Here's my old-school Smith 19 2.5" from the mid-'70s, along with one of my newest acquisitions--a Crosman 357 SNR CO2/BB/.177 pellet gun I got for basement practice. Amazingly, both guns weigh almost exactly the same--30.5 ounces.
