I have a .357 Ruger Blackhawk Flattop with a four digit serial number starting with 63**. I am looking to sell this firearm and don't know the best place to do this or an approximate value of the gun. I feel that the gun shop locally will not give me the value it is worth. Any suggestions?

Balla1aw, welcome to the forum. You are right the gun shop is there to make money for themselves. I have a new model Blackhawk, and I believe yours is probably an old model. Does it have the conversion kit installed? Others will be along that are more knowledgeable. Once you have a price range you might list it in the classified section. To be able to do that you must list your state. You might look on gunbroker.com, armslist.com for similar guns and price.

It should be a type 1 which has the early square serrated ejector rod head. Ruger changed to the round ejector rod head around that SN time frame. Either way it is a desirable early model. We need more info on condition and description before one can determine a value.

You need to post images of the Revolver. Try reading the instructions posted here: http://www.rugerforum.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=51390.

flatgate

PS Hopefully it doesn't look like this one.........

Hey Flatgate, I thought I already "fixed" that one?????
Oh that's right it was THIS one.......

all better now...........

Yes, one never knows just quite "how bad" huh...................

balla1aw, welcome to the Forum, and as noted above, we need to know or "see" a bit MORE to make a better decision/value and help you out, yes, condition is EVERYTHING...........

By the way, the one we pictured above is a 3 digit serial number flattop in the low #1xx range..... 8)

Wow, that is a pretty 4-5/8" flattop. I really like the way it cleaned up. I like Flatgate's also; it would look nice in a case on the mantel or on the wall. Here's mine, 44** serial number.

We need pictures.

Well, here is my "CINDERELLA" story told with pics......RR

PS just sent this guns bigger brother to the engraver.....both serial number 148....

Nice looking restorations. You guys crack me up when you post a serial number as 44** to avoid revealing the number, then post a pic of the gun with the serial number clearly legible.

Not trying to conceal the number, just letting you know the serial number range so you wouldn't have to strain your old eyes reading it. Go jump in a lake.

I wasn't trying to bust your hump, I have just seen it a lot on here and other boards and always wondered why. I have already jumped in a bunch of lakes, so ill pass for now. If you aren't too pissed at me, I would like for you to tell me a bit more about the stocks on that Ruger of yours. I like them.

What happened to cause that #148 to get cut into so many pieces? Who/how did it get repaired? Looks nice now!

Here is one of the pics:

to the OP on how to get the pics to show up here: to the right on your photobucket you will see a listing of links to share at various places - if you click on the "img" section in photobucket and then right click and "paste" in your post here it will show up as above.

Thanks for sharing these!

Not PO'd. I don't know anything about the grips other than that they were on the shooter when I bought it. I really like them. They don't appear to be installed by Ruger. As you can see they are well used. I have seen similar ones on older Ruger single actions. I wouldn't mind having a pair on another one of my single actions.

well after "seeing" the pictures...(have NO clue how I missed them above....duh) I have to revise, my last reply, the pictures show a very nice gun, looks good to us and what it should be , not sure by the pics if it was "safety converted" or not, some can spot that a mile away, I "look" at the sides of the hammer to be certain.......no mention as to any box or paper work, that would put any "premium" to it, but it sure looks pretty nice.....my .02 cents would be in the $850-1050 (RENE) range.............ask high, you can always come down......if someone really wants it, they'll come after it, we call it the "pucker factor"..........
similar one to yours sold at the OGCA for $750 ..............
Good luck

Has the gun been converted to a transfer bar "safety upgrade?" Looking at the trigger in your photo (at the thickness of the trigger) makes me think it has the safety conversion? If yes, that will affect the value to collectors.

The photos make it appear like it is a very nice condition gun, so if it is a true type 1 the RENE collector price guide has it at $1050. As noted by other posts that can vary considerably downward if it has some transition parts/details or if it has had the safety conversion upgrade. As noted above in Dan's posts, over the last few years it has been generally difficult to get any buyers at full price for these guns. But, perhaps it gives you a starting point. JMHO.

I'm glad, I don't want to start out on the wrong foot around here!

To add to the discussion, I have an old three screw Blackhawk (not a flat top) that I bought as my first center fire handgun nearly a quarter century ago. I already had a Ruger MK II Government Target Model I bought in Oakland during a factory display day at a gun shop. Bill Ruger's son was there, and I still have a signed Ruger catalog from the same day I bought the Mark II. I also managed to hang on to the Mark II as well, and I shoot it every week.

I was at a gun show at the Cow Palace in San Francisco with my father (that tells you how long it has been), and was looking for a Browning HiPower and was having trouble finding one I wanted. A year or two later, I managed to find a HiPower Silver Chrome at Western Sports Shop and finally got my HiPower.

When I was at the Cow Palace a Blackhawk wasn't even on my radar. Towards the end of the day, I stumbled across two unconverted three screw Blackhawks, a 4 5/8" and a 5 1/5" one. I was torn between the two, but I liked the handling and aestetics of the 4 5/8" better. The dealer was trying to steal the deal (or trying to be nice to a young kid) and threw in a black Hunter Hollywood style drop holster rig with 25 cartridge loops.

It fit my 14 year old waist well, and I wore that rig for many years while deer hunting and hiking in the Emmigrant Wilderness area of Califorina. I am sure I shocked many urbanites and a couple of Game Wardens when they encountered a young 'gunslinger' out in the trail and loaded for bear. I probably looked like an extra in a John Wayne flick.

Over the years my waistline grew and the holster belt didn't, but I never got rid of it. I lost a bunch of weight a few years back, and 'rediscovered' the holster rig while going through some old stuff. It is in perfect shape and fits like a glove! I may have to reprise my role as a B-western extra on the trail!

In any event, that's how I got started on Ruger single actions.

You guys have been a great reference and a wealth of knowledge. How do i confirm if it has had the safety upgrade??
