Anyone have any idea if 357 maximums are still available and are they worth having. I'm thinking of getting one but want to know a little more info ????

Yes , you can still find the maxies,. shooters for about $600 +.
A very fun gun and easy to load for. Just remember to use the heavy bullets, 180 grain and up like Bill Ruger intended.
Many of the maxies have been used as a base gun for custom
projects . I am still building and testing loads for mine.\
Are they worth having,,, You bet your sweet a-- they are.

Still around, getting harder to find though. $600.00 is a good starting price, every now and again you'll find one a little less. Don't let some of these guys around here pull your leg, either, I do not, nor am I trying to own them all.......................weeeellllllllll...........maybe. Great cartridge, and Sam is right. 180 gr and larger bullets. Hope ya find one.......Coogs.

Believe the Rugers were only made one year, 1984. They pop up from time to time.

Malibu is right on. Mine has been tuned
by Harton and is NOT for sale! Every
one I have seen is accurate.

yes, they do pop up at the gun shows from time to time, in fact a MINT 10 1/2 inch model came in the door last weekend and we took the lady over to our 'dealer' Bill, and he trade her for another gun, was in the $550 value....

The Ruger .357 Maximum, actually a Model BNM-7 (7 1/2"), and the BNM-10 (10 1/2"), were produced from 1982 through 1984, about two years production, less than 10,000 shipped, over 16,000 produced. Some people still cal it a "SRM", which was an early indication by the factory as the model designation.........but it ended up being "BNM". OOOOPPPS!.............did I say less than 10,000 shipped and over 16,000 produced??????? Now what hapened to over 5,000 Maximums???????........Hmmmmmm..........I wonder.????????    Coogs

I have two that won't be headed to Coogs' stash!!

357_Maximum_014.jpg

One on the left is NIB and the other was just broken in a few weeks ago by me! I have collected quite a pile of various factory ammo and brass over the last few years but only shot my reloads through it. I used a 180gr Hornady XTP in one load and Remington 180's in the other. I have some 180gr Cast Performance loaded up but have not had the time to try them out yet. All loads are put together with IMR4227 for the powder.

I was not expecting great results for the first attempt at loading for the Maxi but accuracy offhand at 25 yards was superb! I didn't bring the chrony out to test the loads yet , but that and some serious shooting off the bags is next. I doubt these will be the only two I own!! Look out Coogs...I got a Maxi bug too!! I would really like to find a beater/shooter to mount a scope on and see what one will really do at longer ranges. I would really like to hear of some results if anyone has that kind of info here.

Jeff.

Junkie, get ahold of Bigbore45colt, Matt has a max w/a scope that he shoots quite a bit. Heaviest bullet I have done is 180.........200 would be fine, I have no experience w/ anything over 180, yet. I'm looking for a cast bullet and a load in the 200, 200+ range.
I got a "few" in the closet but not 5000!!!!! I'm always on the hunt, matter of fact I have one being shipped to me this week. Ya gotta love this pistol/round combo!!!!! God Bless, Coogs.

I believe the Maxi does best with bullets in the 180-200 grain range. As I've mentioned, I've had a lot of fun with the Maxis in the past. Alas, now all I have are "safe queens".....

Coogs,

I have some cast 213gr. hardcast bullets that are .358 I have loaded in my 35 Rem. that I have thought about trying in the Maxi. Maybe I will get around to it before this deer season.

Mr Quinn,

Great article!!

Flatgate,

That long barrel sure has a nice set of grips!! Y

You Sir , were very helpful years ago when I was chasing my first Maxi. I knew nothing about the subject then but took notes about the bullet weights and powders and have had great results so far.

I just regret waiting so darn long to get one out and use it like it was meant to be!!

Jeff.

Have only one NIB 'safe prince'. Plus three others coogs cannot have!

A better hand-arm for treestand hunting corn-fed swamp venison, I do not know... 'cept of course for a 480 Bill-freaking-Ruger sixgun!

My best SRM shoots into 2" with help from Leupold at 75 yards off a rest, w/180gr Sierra SJFP.

 8) 8) 8)
