My two best friends on a bear hunt. Ruger M77 MKII 338Win Mag & Ruger SuperRedhawk 44mag

I went to the range today to begin my load work for my SuperRedhawk and my Ruger M77 338Win mag. Good beginning day.

For the 44 mag as far as I am concerned it is very straight forward. I use a Cast Performance Heat Treated 320gr WLNGC - LBT design and lube, in front of 22grs of H110, Starline brass and 350 CCI primer.

Six rounds at 25yds moving at 1390fps on average and group is 1.306"

The 338Win mag will be a work in progress. Today used 215gr Sierra in front of 72grs of H4350 moving at 2879fps with group size being .7335"

I had a 338 77MKII, but gave it to my son as a Christmas gift. I didn't hand load for it, but shooting 225gr Remington CorLoks, it would clover leaf groups at 100yds. Absolutely remarkable for factory loads, but my rifle liked them. Wish it were mine again, but he won't give it back.... :(

That is my fave combo while hunting any type of game.

Good choices!

Yes, it is an easy combo to appreciate and like, sure not much these two can't do on big game.

Not sure what kinda bear you are after but if a big'ne I'd choose a different slug. Though I "only" shoot a 338-06, the 210 gr Partition at 2800 fps has proven a winner on elk. The 185 gr TSX at 2950 fps has done as well. Clearly your gun will shoot. If I were shooting a 338 WM at the larger critters it would be loaded with 225 gr Partitions or 210-225 gr TSX's.

This 215gr SBT is for deer on long shots down a gas line. On black bear it is more than enough although I will use a 210 Par for black bear and other bigger critters the 225gr Par and on large brown I might run into in 2011 in Alaska I will be using the 250gr A-Frame. But for deer hunting this year in Mississippi and in Missouri on long shots down gas lines and across big bean fields I will be using the 215gr Sierra SBT.
