Looking for a little guidance on these loads. I bought a 32 SS and have not had the chance to shoot it yet. I did load up 50 rounds of the following:

CCI small pistol primers, Starline new brass, Rucker Bullet Co 100 gr cast bullets (look like the 98 gr RCBS) and 4.0, 4.2 and 4.5 grs of Universal. It is the last load that concerns me slightly. It is right on the border line, I think, and don't know about the strength of this handgun.

What is your source for that information? Did that source of information state what type of gun they used in the formulation of their data?

Personally, and as I'm sure you will, work up from the lowest load to the highest.

I've not had the opportunity to use Universal in any of my .32 Mag loads. So I can't say. But the Ruger Single-Six is a very STRONG gun. FWIW, John Taffin (I think it was) wrote about a Single-Six that had been converted to a 5 shot .38 Special on this frame. And there are those that want to convert it to a .327 Fed. (which has higher pressures).

But really, why flirt with max loads? The .32 mag is a sweet shooter without magnamizing it. JMHO.

Thank you for the reply. I don't have a source for the strength of the SS. I just don't want to damage anything with my first loads through it. I have loaded the rounds indicated. Unfortunately, I loaded the most with the 4.5 grs. Again, I think I am at the higher edge with those, but don't know about the "Ruger load" of the SS.

I went to the Hodgdon website and checked their data for the .32 Mag using Universal powder.

They don't show data using a cast lead 100 gr bullet. But they do show data for a 100 grain jacketed bullet. MAX recommended load using Universal is... 3.7 gr.

I don't know where you got your load info. But I'd seriously research further before using it.[/b]

Well, I do have a Speer manual that shows a max of 4.7. Not for the bullet I have but it is close. That is the reason I asked. If I was using a Blackhawk 32 H&R I wouldn't worry about it.

What edition of the Speer manual are you referencing??

My Hodgdon cowboy data book lists a 90gr. lead rnfp using universal starting load 3.0 gr. = 819fps and 8,400 cup,--- MAX load 3.2gr.=908fps and 11.500 cup. I think your data was for a 100gr. JHP
