.32-20 in .30 carbine Blackhawk

Help Support Ruger Forum:

How thick is the .32-20's rim? I just measured my OM BH in ,30 Carbine and it has only about .022" clearance between the frame and cylinder. Are the NM's that much wider?

Acorn's 0.065" rim thickness is the max shown on the SAAMI spec, but the minimum spec is 0.055". My samples measure about 0.058". Also, my OM .30 Carbine has about 0.035" space between the frame and cylinder. At any rate, you can see the .32-20 case just isn't going to rotate in an OM .30 Carbine.

FWIW, my .32 convertible NM Blackhawk has like 0.085" between the frame and the NM .32-20 cylinder, lots of clearance for rotation. I'm guessing the NM .30 Carbine must be made similarly, although I don't have one to examine.

Interestingly, that 0.085" number exceeds the maximum SAAMI spec of 0.072" but this has not seemed to produce any "light strikes" in my gun.

Additionally, I measured the two cylinders. The face of the NM .32-20 cylinder is cut back like 0.055" compared to the OM .30 Carbine cylinder: rim clearance.

Please don't hold me to the exact numbers here, I have old eyes. ;)

Re...2 loads.. There was a rifle and pistol loading Generally I was talking with John Linebaugh before he passed as I had another 44 Ruger with the Bisley grip he liked..I had a box of jacketed 32-20 on the table. He scarfed it up as you don't see too much. .He said at one time there really were two loads but by the 40s they only loaded one...the pistol load but used jacketed bullets in the "rifle" rounds. He bought them to shoot in a 1st generation Colt SAA. He made me a 500...wow.. The 454 Casull was more wicked to shoot. Miss talking with him.
