Hi folks,
Have found this Ruger .308. Can any one confirm whether it is a standard catalogue issue or has some one added the sights. It is a M77 mark 2 -308 with laminate stock and 16" barrel. The rear and front sight look Ruger issue but I am not aware of them ever doing a hood on their sights. Serial # 789-xxxxx making this approx 2002/2003 manufacture.

It is good policy to "never say never" with Ruger and especially when talking about overseas offerings. My observation, by looking at their website, is that Gun City in New Zealand offers many "customized" guns. For instance they offer a Mini 14 300 Whisper with silencer, 10/22 with silencer and other Ruger guns with custom features. The sights do look like they could be Ruger made, although the front sight looks suspicious. Stainless rifles with sights were very short lived here in the States. Ruger is fully capable of making the sights and it is possible that they are offered in countries other than the USA. Maybe there is a Ruger Collector from New Zealand who could give a hands on description - or - just call Gun City and ask. Their website says: Please call our shop for more information on +64 3 379-8888 in Christchurch, New Zealand

Thanks Randy, I rang Guncity twice but neither of the people I spoke to knew anything about the rifle apart from a guy trading it in for another rifle. I am aware Ruger will sometimes put sights on a rifle by request and also Midway were selling Ruger 77 front and rear sights a few months ago. It is possibly one of the above, either way this is the best place to ask. Regards, JR

I'm far from an expert, but that front sight doesn't look like a factory Ruger part to me. The barrel band looks much longer than anything I've seen on a Ruger, and I don't recall seeing that shape of ramp either.

Here is an example of an early slotted sight that Chad refers to:
