I saw this long time a go in a gun book, about in the 70's. What you do is get some #1 buck shot that is 310 dia. . Put 3 grs. of 700X in the 30-06 , then seat the shot about half way and crimp it. I have a Remington 700 and it well put the shot at about 1400 PFS. I get about a 1" group at 25 yds.. And it well kill a squirrel.

Wouldn't a 100-110gr bullet work better than a round ball? I have to admit though that shooting buck shot does sound like cheap fun. I might try that with my 30-30. Maybe two balls?

Well you get 1280 #1 buck shot in 8 lbs.. ( about $50 shipped) So you can shot 1 shot for .10 cents. or $28.00 for all 1280 shots . Where with the stander 30-06 round is about .75 to $1.00 a shot. It is a lot cheaper , but never tried it in a 30-30?

I once let "Johnnie" from Dunn's Sporting Goods in Marion, Il. shoot some old cast bullets from back in the day.. He said what do you want to do that for..? After the first one I had to threaten him to get the Roberts and the few shells left.. Boy did he laugh about that.. Unique but I would half to look on the shell box to tell you.. 10 grains or something like that. MUCH fun..

The cast bullets were give to me and were lubed with Bees wax mixture or something like that. Old shooter died and widow gave parts and pieces to a former buddy. .257 's flat nose / 87 grains or so... unknown mold of course.. still have 200 maybe.. all ways too busy to do any thing.. Sellingf Cows + Hay business.. Sister next door is cleaning out her yard sale stuff too. Life is too short. Going to add the range house in back of the barn.. Bullet trap is done built @ 100 yards. #2 will be @ 200 or 250..?

Hi,

Have never loaded buckshot for "plinkers" but did some reading on it a couple of years ago. One suggestion that made a certain touch of sense was to start w/ 00 buck and run it thru your sizer to .311": idea is to give a bit of a bearing surface for the rifling. Author said kept to a max of about 1400 fps, one should have a load good to ~25 yds in most rifles, as far as 50 in a few...
