Got an easy one, considering buying an unconverted 3 screw Blackhawk. Wanted to know if the action was similar in operation to a Colt SAA with the 4 clicks. If a Colt is timed properly it should not leave a drag mark on the cylinder from the bolt. Do the 3 screw Rugers function the same? If there is a drag mark would that indicate the timing is off?

Thanks.

the 3-screw action is similar to a Colt SAA in that yes you will have multiple clicks when cocking. Yes, there is a half cock, full cock, safety position, and resting position.

A drag mark does not necesarily indicate the timing is off. This ring is probably more commonly the result of somebody lowering the hammer from half cock down to the "resting" position rather than pulling the hammer to full cock and then returning it to the resting position.

c.r. is "Right On" with his answer. Any 3 screw with a ringed cylinder indicates "lack of care and/or knowledge".

Some could care less if the cylinder is ringed. Some understand how the gun functions and will NEVER get a ringed cylinder.

So timing is not the only issue here. Picked up a Colt New Frontier recently and was taking notice of the difference between it and the New Model Blackhawks as far as operation and cylinder drag marks. I thought the old models blackhawks may be similar but don't own any.....yet.

I may have what you are looking for. I was thinking of selling it and my Super Blackhawk to buy one of the new ones. Both were manufactured in 1971. The Blackhawk functions perfectly but is not a "prime condition" or "minty" gun given its' age. It is almost 40 years old and are made to be shot. It has some nicks on the ejector shroud and the butt. A little holster wear and not converted. The Super is perfect except it has Packmyer grips and has been converted. If you have futher interest just PM me and we can discuss details.

Well over a thousand through each of these:

3 of 'em.... a Super Single Six Convertible (although the Mag cylinder only has about 50 rounds through it), a .357 Blackhawk, and a 44 Mag Super Blackhawk.

Also, a recently acquired SBH... only a few hundred rounds through it so far.... but no ring.

If there's a ring on a 3-screw, it's out of time or it has been misused.

Yeah, my old 3 screw Single Six has had a bazillion rounds through it and does not have a drag line. Neither do my Colts.

As an aside, I bought my first Blackhawk way back around 1975 or so, it was a New Model with the transfer bar. For many years it was the only single action revolver I owned. One day I went into a gun shop and was looking at a Uberti replica of the SAA. Not knowing any better, I lowered the hammer from half cock. Boy did I catch a load of stuff from the owner of the gunshop. That ain't no blankety blank Ruger he yelled. Never lower the hammer from half cock, always bring it back to full cock first.

Never made that particular mistake again.

Yes.

OM BH (BKH 45 ) .45 Colt 7.5" barrel.

(Not nearly as good as flatgate's pic, but it should serve the purpose.)

Besides having well over 3,000 rounds of live ammo through it, I've played with it, dry fired it ( a little bit ), and worked the action so much it's smoothed itself out to the point it feels like it's had an action job. Only sign of wear is in the lead to the latch notch.

When I bought the pistol it was virtually brand new. There was no wear on the breach face, no wear at the rear of the cylinder in the ratchet, no bluing or anodizing wear, but the cylinder was ringed all the way around. This was caused by people who either did not know how to handle a single action revolver, or did not care.
That cylinder was later ruined by Pyrodex powder causing pits in the chambers. Apparently l did not clean it enough. So I replaced it with a brand new early New Model cylinder. That's the cylinder that's in it now and there is no full circumference drag line.

Well here are my two main match CAS guns. One I bought new in 67. Both have had a Kzillion rounds through them and no ring. Lots of holster wear. The other one with the rubber grips is my back up and I have not shot it yet. Why do I need a back up? Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhh because I told the wife I did.
Anyway it has a cylinder ring from somebody else :(
