Hi Folks, My dad bought the above 77 today, and was wondering if the earlier style tang safety guns are more collectible now, or should he just shoot it. It sounds like it is 99% plus on condition with just a few tiny handling marks. He got it with 96 rounds, a gun case, and a Leupold Vari-X II on it. Not a bad rig overall. From Ruger's site it is an '82. Many thanks and God Bless, Marc

Marcruger, they were made for shootin'. I have only one Ruger rifle and it's a tang safety .243RL, a short action. Love it! .270? Great caliber!! Tell him to use it and enjoy it for what it is. But what do I know...

Unless it's a very rare caliber (like my tang safety .30-06 !!), it's not very collectible..... take it hunting - that's why Bill Ruger made 'em.

Note the exclamation points..... a "rare" .30-06 is about as sarcastic as you can get. I'm not dead certain, but I believe there were more 06s than any other caliber.... probably more 06s than all the other calibers combined.

I bought one just like it about 6 weeks ago. I've already adjusted the trigger and it's a really great shooter. It came with a custom stock that had problems so I put a Bell & Carlson camo stock on it and the groups tightened right up. I'm not a fan of fiberglass stocks so I bought a like need original Ruger stock in excellent condition and it should be here in a few days. I also have a Ruger Model 77 with tang safety in 300 Win Mag and it's a great shooter that is my Elk hunting rifle.

I had a Ruger Model 77 with tang safety 25-06 back in the 90's that was a laser beam in terms of accuracy and a friend talked me into selling to him and I've always regretted it.

Like they said they are made for hunting and shooting and have little collector value.

It is funny as I had a Ruger 77 tang safety back when I first started hunting (1980) and I bought it used but in really nice shape. The guy I bought it from insisted I keep the box with the gun as he was sure someday there would people that wanted that gun with the box, papers, etc. It was a 7mm Rem Mag, no sights...

Well, I kept the gun with the box but did sell it just before I went to college as I sold all my guns at that point to help with my college costs but funny how nearly 30-years later that old timer was right!

There are new buyers born every day and guns we take for granted now may be very special to one of these buyers in say 30+ years so you never know.
