First of all, an embarrassing admission. In my haste to acquire more .22LR ammo, I recently heard Midway had some and was able to buy one brick of each of two available types.
I thought the Federal was high velocity and they had some Aguila "Super" which I erroneously thought was high velocity. The Federal was target ammo and the Aguila was sub sonic. I'm usually much more careful.
I was expecting FTFs etc. Since it was raining, I had no interest to go to my range, 21 mi aways, so I used a redneck bullet catch. It was a 5 gal bucket filled with water and shooting through a 1X2 board holding a plastic bag down. The backstop worked perfectly, just a little water splashed onto the garage floor, neighbors couldn't have known and they're not really close anyway.
Wow was I surprised and pleased. My Remington 597 cycled both kinds of ammo. Even more shocking, my Ruger SR22 pistol worked fine as well! I really expected the subsonic ammo wouldn't have sufficient impulse to function the SR22s slide. Happiness that I didn't make an expensive mistake. Don
