The bullet is going down range and it has to land somewhere. Remember a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.
Years ago, my ex-wife and I were out in the Mojave shooting tin cans. I set one pretty far out (don't know exactly). I was plinking with my 300 Win Mag and fired off a shot at the tin can. It didn't move but I felt I probably hit it. We walked on out and it was a clean miss. Lying next to it was a lizard (desert iguana, I think) shot through the neck. I picked it up and said "Damn, I was sure it was a clean head shot. Musta been a little low" My ex-wife just stood there with her mouth open!

That's expensive plinking, I never saw them, ever below $2/round.
