I picked up another .22 Magnum rifle yesterday. All stainless
Marlin 883SS.
This to go along with my 783.
The new gun is getting a Pentax Gameskeeper 4-12 as soon as the mounts get here.
Not a bad gun for $250 dollars brand new.

I sighted it in at 175 yards, which seems long, but it allows 200 yard shots.
I was aiming 6 inches high at 200 yards and dropping every shot in the black..
With a gun so sighted, it's 1.5 inches high at 25 yards, approx. 4 inches high at 75 yards and 6 inches high at 100 yards, 4 inches high at 150, dead on at 175, and only 6 inches low at 200.
That's with standard 40 grain soft points. In summary, 6 inches high at the most, and 6 inches low at the most for a really long 200 yard shot.
With 30 grainers, it will shoot much flatter, the same as the .17, and shoot 3 inches high maximum and 3 inches low maximum at 200 yards.

Not sure why anyone bothers with the .17 calibers when the .22 magnum will shoot just as flat with 30 grain bullets, and get there with double the energy.
Love the .22 magnum.

Because a $300 .17 will typically pile them into a half inch at 100yds and the 20gr XTP will penetrate much better than a 30gr .22Mag. I sight it in dead on at 100yds and it's only 8" low at 230yds. No funky "holdunder" at closer ranges.

I don't know why anyone would bother with a .17 either. I bought a used (vintage) Savage 65M for ~$150 and it will do anything that any .17 on the market will do, plus more stopping power.

Not to mention I can carry it and my OM convertible Single-Six and feel really cool! 8)
