Broke the seal on my 2024 modern firearm deer season in GA yesterday.

In a ladder stand watching a harvested peanut field when this thick dude came to eat in the last 15-20 minutes of legal shooting time.

One buck tag filled and one more to go. Also have tags for 10 does if I want them.

YUM......looks like a 6pt I don't see any brow tines? That's the minimum legal antler size in my neck of the woods....need to have at least 3 points on one side....brow tines count as a point if over a inch so a lot of very young crab claw bucks get shot.

8 point, the "down side" has 4 points.

The left/up side has the G3 broke off, but still an inch or so left.

In GA, you have one "any buck tag". The other tag is 4 points or more on one side or a buck with 15+ inch inside spread. I used my 4 points tag on the deer yesterday.

So if I see a huge 4, 5 or 6 point, I will have a tag.

I'll be up at my mother-in-law's place in GA in a little over a week. Planning to hunt with my SRH in .454 and/or my Rossi '92 in the same caliber. I'm still taking my 788 in .308 just in case. The revolver and/or carbine will be for a couple stands where the longest shot is ~65 yards. If I don't get anything there I'll hunt from the edges of the cotton and soybean fields.

Spent some time over the Holidays in the Louisiana deer dogging woods.

My number was drawn on 1/1/25 and I tagged a nice buck and a good sized doe. My host knocked down a small buck as weli.

The group took 5 deer in 4 turnouts for the day in total. 2 bucks and 3 does and one feral hog.

It was a fun day chasing the hounds.

Son has seen what he describes as "the biggest buck I've ever seen alive outside a pen" not once but twice in the past two weeks. Today's the last opportunity to put a bullet in him. Going all out to make it happen but not high expectations--cold, windy, scattered snow and I'm not up to doing much brush busting to push him into the open. Can't imagine how this size buck wasn't seen before or during regular rifle season.

Good hunting!!

I've signed off on 2024 deer season. Had a puzzling occurance last evening and decided to just be done. Heavy snow made visibility a bit unclear but I'm positive the hold was good, the squesseze was good, and it appeared the deer was clear of brush. At the shot, I didn't hear the typical thump of a solid hit which is usually quite apparent when using a suppressor. The deer didn't flinch, hump, kick, or any of the typical reactions to a hit. I'd picked a doe on the edge of the group and went directly to where she'd been standing when fired at. No hair or scrambling in the snow and no evidence of bullet kicking up snow beyond. Followed the tracks for 100-150 yards w/o a trace of blood. Only explanation I have is a small unseen branch deflected the bullet. Or maybe an Angel peed down my gun barrel.
We've decided to spend the $150 processing charge that would have been spent on the missed deer to purchase some grass fed, cut and packaged beef from a family friend whose all natural grass fed beef business ran long on product and short on customers. He needs to move the beef and is willing to 'deal' on burger and roasts.
