Does anyone here have any experience shooting 200 grain bullet out of a handgun? will my gp100 be able to handle it?

I have never shot 200 gr but I use a lot of 185 gr cast bullets over a hot charge of H-110 in all my .357's (revolvers and rifles). I even shoot them in my 3" S&W model 66 and it is only a K-frame. Your GP-100 will handle any weight of .357 magnum ammunition as long as pressures are kept within industry standards.

On the smaller frame revolvers the light weight bullets are actually harder on the forcing cones than heavier bullets due to "sand blasting" from unburned powder at high velocity.

I ordered some 200 gr Corbon ammo just to have on hand. I shot one from my 4 inch GP. I couldn't even tell much difference from say a 158 gr load.

I used to shoot 200 gr .357 loads all the time. All though it was from a .357 redhawk and now from a .357 maximum blackhawk. In those 2 guns I shot 35 cal. rifle bullets.

I used to use LBT style 195gr WFN-GC cast bullets for hunting and long range shooting. Using H110 they were loaded to 1,100 fps out of my 6" Colt Python and 6" S&W model 686. After shooting about 500 of those loads in each revolver they are still tight.

Your GP will handle any SAMMI spec ammo.

BTW. those bullets were extremely accurate at long range.

I've shot a lot of them out of my Taurus 607, with a max load of lil'gun, so I'm sure the Ruger can handle them. Will completely penetrate an 8" oak log at 100yds!

Thank for all the info and help. I think I'm going to forget about a 44 magnum and keep the gp and just enjoy it. With that kind of ammo it should do what I need it too for hunting.

I tried the Cor-Bon 200gr in my SP101 DAO... it wasn't that fun, but it didn't hurt my hand.

It will crush "bones & all" fired from your GP100...

.357mag bear medicine.

years ago we had some bowling pin shooters shooting a 200 grain hard cast in a N frame S&W... They had to use a 38 Special case to get it in the cylinder...

I shoot 200 grain cast bullets (Lyman 358430) from my .357s all the time. 13 grains of 2400 gets me ~1050 fps from my 2 1/4" SP101 and 1155fps from my 4" L-frame.

My carry load for the 66 pictured below is 5.8 of Unique under a 200 grain soft cast slug:

Hits hard and shows good expansion in wet newspaper.
