$2,000 appliance lawsuit with $15,000 lawyer fees?!!

Help Support Ruger Forum:

We bought a new Frigidaire refrigerator about 4 years ago. Not long after the icemaker stopped working. Called the store and they sent out a repairman. All he did was unplug it, plug it back in and push few buttons. Said it's ok now. Worked fine for about a year then had the same issue again. I did some research online and found a video that walked me thru the sequence of buttons to push and correct the problem. So far so good.

I used to have a great appliance repair guy, but he retired and moved to Mexico. He always said that the solution to today's poorly built appliances was to keep them as simple as possible. For a frig, he recommended the old fashioned style of freezer on top, frig below with one door each, and no ice maker or water connection at all. For washers he said that a traditional top loader with just two or so choice of cycles would likely last decades rather than just a few years. Gone are the days when I bought a Maytag washer that moved all over the world with me when I was in the military, and lasted almost 30 years when it finally gave up the ghost.

As for Washer-Dryers...my wife and I were living in an apartment and there was a spot for a stackable one. She picked out a Maytag, primarily because Consumer Reports said that their tubs did not rust out like most of all the other ones. The Maytag repairman switched the electrical to 110v to make it work. This was around 1988. Shortly thereafter we moved into a house we bought and had the Maytag people move the appliances which only had a place for a stackable as well. It had 220v and the repairman changed it back. Since that time, the only repair that I have had is to replace some sort of rubber base under the tub. So as far as a washer is concerned Maytag is the one! As for the dryer which has only recently had any problems it has been great too. I am going to call them tomorrow and ask if possibly the heating element is giving up the ghost. After all these years, can't complain.
As for a fridge...Amana, if you can find one.

My beer fridge died last fall. Upgraded to a new Frigidaire French door, bottom freezer model.
Read tons of reviews.
Almost bought a Samsung but there has been a serious issue with the icemakers for years that has not been addressed, plus they are made in Korea ?
LG seems to be serviced by nobody ? Plus they seem to be assembled from parts sourced all over the place.
Bosch, formerly a premier German name, are now made in China, according to the label I read in one $ 2,000 fridge anyway.
Good luck, it's a jungle out there.

It's called over engineering .... too many features... used to be a frig or other kitchen appliance would last 30 years... not any longer.

Not really "too many features," it's more that people have been trained to be cheap.

In the mid-80s, a side-by-side refrigerator with water and ice in the door was about $1500. Today, the same type of fridge is about $1700. What had to give to keep the price that low? The same is true for washers, dryers, stoves, etc.

People will pay $90k for a pick up truck or $1,200 for a purse but balk at $4,000 for a fridge.

You get what you pay for.

BTW, I've been selling large appliances for the past fifteen years.

Made in China.

Made in China but easier to get serviced than any Samsung.

We carry a brand called Beko that is all made in Yurrip except for their microwaves.

I use to buy sears appliances only had pretty good luck with them I know the last gas stove we got was made by Bosch lasted 20 years so naturally I go back to sears I ended up canceling the whole thing their customers sucks snd the delivery sucks so I went to Home Depot got a GE everything went smoothly

As a house warming I bought my GF all new kitchen appliances and the fridge and clothes washer went out in 2 years.

Wife and I rented a renovated beach house a few years back that had what looked like a pretty new freezer on the bottom Samsung refrigerator in it. Dern upper part stopped cooling after about 2 days there.. were staying for two weeks. Rental company finally brought a new one a week later. We survived by buying dry ice every day for the upper part. The freezer still worked... seems the upper part was cooled by a fan blowing cold air into it and the fan broke. Last year I was talking to a friend and he said they had a Samsung and the same thing happened the replacement part was not available and he went on line and discovered that thousands of these had the same problem....

Now I do have to say our Kenmore Refrigerator died just before Thanksgiving.... but it was 20 years old. I suspect it could have been fixed. Probably the circuit board in the back but we did not have the time or energy to wait on someone, assuming we could find them, to come out and look and then order the part and come back.

I have to disagree, a little. Washing machines have gotten ridiculous with options. All you need is a timer and a temperature select.

All that stuff has got to drive the price up. Same for a pickup truck. A lot of the cost these days is tech. Just give me an FM radio with simple bluetooth. I can get by without all the inboard electronics, and fagetabou trying to work on anything yourself under the hood.

In the mid-80s, a decent top load washer was $450. Adjust that for inflation, and you're at $1,400. If we exclude, Speed Queen, my most expensive top load washer is $899, and that one will talk to you. People still come to me looking for a $400 washer and not willing to pay $1,400 for a Speed Queen which will last 20 years. Why? They've been trained to be cheap.

The tech is not the reason that your truck is $90k, it is an excuse to charge $90k.

Very common problem with Samsung. I will only sell Samsung if the customer is specifically looking for Samsung.
