1972 Blackhawk

I just got this one to day from a dear friend who has cancer real bad. He wanted me to have it. Thanks Greg.

It's a 1972 model as near as I can figure and is a .45cal Colt. With a 71/2" barrel. It hardly has a turn ring. It has a little holster wear and seems good to go.

No firing pin safty bar either..

That is a .45 Colt (or 45 Long Colt in some circles) and it was made in 1972 as you thought. That is a great treasure to hold on to because of the sentimental value but it also happens to be one of a relatively small run of only 3 years in the 3 screw configuration for .45's. Mine is a great shooter with some 250-260 gr bullets and 8-10 grs of Unique. I'd shoot the hell out of it and remember all the good times with your buddy everytime you pull that trigger. I am very sorry to hear of battle with cancer.

Thanks for the info there Mr COR. I am a reloader myself and I am already thinking about dies for the .45 Colt cartridge. I am going to try it out this weekend.

Baldy, What a gracious and kind friend you have..........I'm very sorry to hear about his illness.

I got one like that about a year ago off Gunbroker; made in 1971. I'm 63 and it was my very first handgun chambered in .45 Colt. I reload too and it has become one of my favorites. The 255 grain Keith semiwadcutters over 16.0 grains of 2400 are just awesome in my gun.

However, I had to have the chamber throats reamed out to .4525" to accept the forward driving band of the Keith bullets.

Don't tell anyone but if you take a Hornady 250XTP and put a healthy dose of W296 behind it your "cowboy load" slinging sixgun can magically transform into a 44 Magnum with a bigger starting hole.

It hasn't lasted over 130yrs for nothin'.

Here is my favorite load

270SAA (Air cooled WW's and a touch of tin) in front of 18.5grs of 2400. It shoots good in all of my guns. 16grs behind the same bullet is Dave Scovills load and he designed the bullet.

Montana Bullet Works makes the best 270SAA bullet commercially if you don't cast.
