Most factory ammo I see for the 357 is either 125 or 158 gr. I notice reloading info for 140gr and that Hornaday makes a 140gr bullet. Is the 140 gr just a good in between bullet or is there some specfic use for it? I alos notice that it was a 140gr bullet that hornady chose for the leverloution .

It strikes me as a being a compromise weight.
At one time, Speer offered a 140 JHP. Might still.....dunno.
As far as using it in the new-fangled levergun ammo....I suspect the idea was to allow for more velocity @ X-amount of pressure, while remaining heavy enough to do it's job as a hunting round. That, and being's how a 140 has more bearing length than a 125...it's probably a tad more accurate at distance.
But that's just a guess.

I have heard many claims that the 140 is the most accurate weight you can shoot in a 357. I have tried them and with the first load I picked they shot as good as all other bullets I have tried. But I was not impressed enough to load them exclusively. I now just punch paper with whatever is cheap. For serious work I use 180 grain hardcast.

I like the 180gr XTP in my levergun. It is very accurate and the second crimp groove allows a slightly larger powder charge. I haven't hunted with it yet but I think it would do a good job on small deer.

Some years ago, gun writer Wiley Clapp was a big fan of the 140 gr bullet in the .357. He wrote a number of articles on it giving the velocity and accuracy figures, shooting from a Ransom Rest.

Besides the Hornady 158gr XTP/HP, the Remington 140gr JHP is one of my favorite bullets for the .357Mag. I bought 3000 of them a few years ago when they were on sale at Grafs or Midway, forgot which, but they were really cheap compared to current prices, like 5 cent each!! They proved to be exceptionally accurate in my 586 and 27-2, matching or in some cases bettering the XTPs. So much so that I don't plink or practice action shooting with my remaining 2000...I save them for 50 or 100 yd shooting. They make a good general load for a 3" Ruger SP101, even at 50 yds. They also work OK in my Marlin 1894C, but 180s excel in it.
