I've got a bunch of skunks around. I'm looking for a load that will not mess up my basement (crawl space). 22LR shot works but not always first shot. Looking for loads for the shotguns. Also any one with experience here.

Unless I'm not understanding the question, you may not be able to do this safely.
The #12 shot is of no consequence as shotgun loads are dictated by shot weight not size.
Attempting to arrive at an unpublished shotgun load is particularly dangerous mixing different powders, their rates and wad columns, even with different hulls.
At a glance, the lightest powder charge and lowest velocity I seen for 7/8 ounce loads in 12ga and 20ga was about 1180fps. I'm sure this is going to be too powerful in the confines of a basement.

If you are getting fair results with the 22 snake shot, you should good to great results with 38 or 44 shot shells.

I just looked at CCI and their shotshell data.
22lr = 31gr of #12 shot at 1000fps.
38spl = 100gr of #9 shot at 1000fps.
44spl = 140gr of #9 shot at 1000fps.

AND I see these are available too.

38spl = 84gr of #4 shot at 1000fps.
44spl = 110gr of #4 shot at 1000fps.

I'm sure there are also other calibers available such as 9mm, 45auto and 45colt.

Won't that skunk let out some stink when you kill it in the crawl space?
Why not block off the entrance.

If you get a quick kill no odor. I've got some 9mm shot, but it will not feed in either my XPcompact nor my SIG.

As for blocking off the space I have ferral cats which control otherwise bad rodent problems.

BTW do those spreader wads actually work?

Would a CCI CB do too much collateral damage?
They are 29gr at 710fps and very quiet from a bolt action.
Maybe a laser on it too!

I'll give cb caps a try. I think that they will feed in my 22/45.

As for odor I remove the dead skunk immediatey. Otherwise something relaxes and you get the mercapitan odor.

Without a doubt, I dispatched enough skunks to know first hand.
I would use a Have A Heart trap cover it so it won't spray, Tie a rope to the trap take
a ride to a pond and throw the trap in! In a couple minutes pull the trap and dead skunk out then reset the trap for the next victim.
OP Firing a shotgun in a crawl space your kidding right?
Plumbing wiring concrete think about it! :shock: :roll: ps

I've shot skunks from most every angle and point of impact but still have mostly "stinkers". Plug all the access points except one and put a live trap there.
If you still want to "shoot 'em". My thoughts: the handgun shot loads are a bit better than 22lr but I wouldn't count on them to make one shot kills at "across the crawl space" distances.
IMHO, I'd try to find the most accurate "sub-sonic/low noise" HP 22 ammo my equipment handles and use that. The ammo that fits this criteria here is CCI sub-sonic HP, Remington C-Bee HP, and Aguila sub-sonic HP--all have shown high level accuracy.
I have a 1000fps pellet rifle but it's only good if you can make perfect head shots.
I'm not in the pest control business at Contender's level so he's likely got some better advice.

Small plastic lid, 4 inches or so. You want it behind the trap trigger. Set the trigger after you slide the lid to the back of the trap. Put the trap down first and then dribble cat food , marsh mellows down trough the wire mesh. Doesn't haft to be perfect. Put a small pile in front of the door on the out side of the trap. The idea is to get them to eat that first and then go in..

79 and counting. Got another Ground Hog the other week. First one in about ten years or so. They generally don't go for it.. It was a young one.

REMEMBER there is a recipe on the internet to rid you of SKUNK smell. Peroxide, baking soda, and dawn I think without looking. Works better than any thing else so far. Chemist developed it...

My neighbor had a skunk problem Killed 2 from his deck with a pellet gun. Head shots.. no odor

I think young skunks are unable to produce scent.
If it were me I would shot the cats and let the skunks be.

The cats kill rodents that are a big problem, the skunks eat insects and carrion, that's no use.

I have killed around 10 skunks and so far no odor problem from a clean kill. Problem from a wounded skunk!

Hi,

Maybe some times!

I'd heard that story for a long time, so last time there was a pesky skunk in the yard (I had a big tom cat who'd fight with anything less than three times his size--didn't want those two getting together), I put an air rifle pellet thru the back of its head and it dropped like a stone. No smell. Hey, they're right...

Until a couple of minutes later when all the muscles relaxed, and a puddle of that musky fluid dribbled out on the ground, full strength. I don't recall many times I've been as nauseated as I was burying that animal, and the area stunk for days. So the idea of shooting one under the house just seems to invite an undesireable result to me.

The first skunk I shot was somewhat similar. I got it with a double tap from my 9mm with target ammo. It was outside and I didn't get back to clean up for about 30min. Horrible mercaptin stink. Now I clean up right away. When I look for skunks I take a garbage bag and exam gloves. Immediately bag the skunk. Always handle skunks with gloves as they are a reservoir animal for rabies! The shots aren't as painful as they used to be but it's still a series and unplesant. If you or one of your animals get bitten or have direct contact call animal control and get the skunk tested!
