I picked up a used 10/22 today for $170. It is just the base modedl wood and blued. I checked the serial number and it was made in 1984. I know the 10/22 has gone through a lot of changes over the years and there just seems to be a little something a little different than the new ones

My question is what has changed about the 10/22 since the mid 80s?

There's been different variation over the years, both cataloged and the uncataloged contracted models. The biggest across-the-board changes came a while back when the bbl band, trigger and trigger assembly started being produced from a polymer. The finishes have also changed over the years.

Other than the minor changes of late...there really aren't any functional differences at all.

Every part made from the beginning of the gun to the current day will interchange without problems. There are plenty of variations, but no real changes.
