I fired three rounds before this happened. 74 years old been shooting 22 since I was 9 or 10 never had this happen. All I heard was a pfffffffft. Couldn't think of another explanation. No cleaning rod ran a twig down the barrel good continued shooting not with the cci.

Pushed the bullet out with 'a twig'? You were lucky.
I caution Grandkids about continuing to fire after noticing a weak report. Not sure they pay enough attention to such things. With ear pro it's not as apparent. They're more likely to just rack the bolt and try again.
I'll admit to an OOPS last week that could have been serious. I'd bought 6.8SPC ammo from a custom loader and was doing an accuracy check. Had my big ear pro muffs snugly in place and 3rd shot didn't recoil or cycle the bolt. Opened the bolt and out popped a case with bullet still in place. Checked the primer and it was dented. I set that round aside and continued shooting w/o further issues.
Next opportunity, I pulled the bullet and found the primer had fired but there was no powder so the bullet hadn't moved. With the heavy duty ear pro, I couldn't hear the primer pop.

With every person that I have taught the basics of shooting I have warned about squibs and how to handle them. I always tell them if there is a misfire, wait 30 seconds and then clear the weapon from the chamber (not to stick a stick down the barrel!). But in my lifetime I have never actually experienced a squib.

Never had a .22lr squib.
But I had plenty of .22,s that did not fire. They had good solid hits from the firing pin.
When I was a kid ( may be late 60's early 70's) I had a bunch of 22's that did not fire. My Mom wrote a letter to the ammo manufacture.
(I cannot remember which one, it was maybe Winchester, or Remington)
A week or two latter, a letter of apology and a 500 round case of 22lr bullets came in the mail for me.
My Mom was a good writer, and I was a happy camper (.22 shooter).
Now if you reload for subsonic, I did have a squib. I would load 147gr FMJ to shoot thru a suppressor they worked great. ( would use 3.0 grs of Bullseye & 147 FMJ *Note use at your own risk*) I decided to try 158gr FMJ loaded for subsonic in an UZI. It got stuck in the barrel, I noticed it as soon as I pulled the trigger. But no problem, I removed the barrel used a metal rod punched the squib out. Put the barrel back on changed ammo and was good to go.
Have fun shooting. Be safe. Always make sure you have a good backstop for your bullet travel.

More than one. With Remington Thunderbolts.
With the exception of my .22/250, when I couldn't find other ammo ( going back some time), I won't use any Remington ammo anymore. Just bad QC I guess, but too many problems. The box I had for the .22/250 had 3 that were bad as well. for .22 LR or WMR it's CCI and Aguila, with the exception of some Federal Punch for my "late night" firearm.

With a semi auto, and the tendency of folks to buzz through a magazine of ammo, they never notice it. With semiauto 22 a squib usually is louder than a full power load because all the noise and powder comes out of the breach end. I've even had a Remington 552 detonate halfway into the chamber (over sensitive primer?) and blew out the side of the case. Unfortunately, I wasn't wearing hearing protection. My right ear got a real ringing.

Weirdest thing I ever had happen, again with that Federal bulk ammo I don't use anymore, was having the base blown off of the case, leaving the brass cylinder of the rest of the case filling the chamber and causing a failure to feed!

No squibs to date (40 years of shooting) on any gun.

Lots of ftf after a good solid strike. I usually sit these aside and at a later time manually load them so the striker will hit in a different spot. Some fire, some still won't.
