Question? Does Anyone Have A Load For The 45-70?

For a Browning BPCR or a C Sharps (Quigley) rifle with a 405gr RNFP cast moly coated lead bullet with Alliant, American Select powder, going 1400 fps or a little less?

The Lyman Cast Bullet manual is a great source. I have had great luck with IMR3031 and am now going to try AA5744, as I have heard good things about this powder. You should be able to get that velocity with the "Trapdoor Springfield" loads if you use the "maximum" loads.

I suggest you read some reloading manuals
and research data on the internet.

Not with American select powder but A great read on loading the 45-70 is Forty Years with the 45-70. By Paul Matthews. I got my copy from a buddy who cast heavy bullets for the Quigley shoots in Forsyth MT for his C. Sharps gun. I believe he mostly stuck to black powder however.
My loads are more level 3 loads unsuitable for your gun so I won't share them here.

Hodgdon has loads for 3 kinds of guns. Trapdoor,Lever, and modern. Do not use modern in trapdoor or lever. I load the 405gr lee hollow base with the trail boss data. In the heavy 1884 the 10 year old can shoot it. I also load a no recoil load for the kids. I use about 20gr Pyrodex or true black then press a tight round ball down on the powder.NO AIR GAP. No crimp. The little kids can fire it. I will look up the ball size if you want. In the past there were 45/70 shot shell made. I played with this some. For the 1400fps you are looking for you may need to find other powder. Just use data for any 405gr cast bullet. The links I put up have several powders close to that or under.

Yes a VERY good book. For a great fun low recoil round and the most accurate at 100-150 yards per the book. 300gr lead with 10grs. Unique and a large pistol primer. I use this load in SASS in the Cody Dixon event.
For a fun black powder load 300GR. 40 grs. of 3F and filler about like a 45 Colt. Yes there are many loads for the 45-70 Govt. that is what makes them so great. A 500gr bullet out of a trap door and a Sharps is a real thumper
I do believe the load you are asking about is close to a factory load. From what I understand why the factory load is light is so it can be shot in a Trap Door.

I really enjoy shooting these in a SASS Event that is called Plainsman. You shoot 6 rifle, 10 cap and ball pistol and 4 shotgun all with black powder and rifle targets at 50-75 yards. Then TD can be shot pretty quick with practice. My time for the above is around 45-60 seconds depends how much movement you have to do.

I had a 45/70 sold it and went with a .458 Socom in an AR platform. Great Gun!

Internet advice hasn't been published in a manner to where a lawsuit would be won if something went wrong with it's data.

I know in this day & age of trying to save money & such,, you can ask for what someone else prefers. But,, I always strongly suggest a person buy & own several loading manuals,, study what is published by established companies,, (Lyman, Hornady, Speer, Nosler, Hodgdon, etc) and build their own load,, that THEIR gun prefers.
The main thing is safety,, and after that,, each gun is a machine unto itself,, and as such,, should be accurate. Accuracy trumps power every time.
Some guns shoot almost anything very accurately,, and other guns,, it takes a LOT of experimentation to find the best load.
Yes,, primers, powder & bullets cost.
But at what cost is Safety?
Or how about wounding an animal over a clean kill?

Experiment, and find your best. But by all means,, use published & safe data.

Good place to start is https://loaddata.com/ Enter your bullet and the powder you want to use and if anyone has used that combo the loads will be listed. Every gun is different, so my loads might not give you good results in yours.

I'll give you a good starting point.
I use 20.0gr of #2400 under a Lee 400gr RFN sized to .460" and lubed with SPG LUBE. I use a 1/2gr of Dacron pillow stuffing as a filler under the bullet. I seat to the crimp groove, and crimp with a Lee factory crimp die. (Collet style). From my two Marlins, it's supremely accurate. I shot this with my 2016 Remlin while sighting in at 50yds. 3-shots same hole. It chrono's about 1,400fps.

As stated try the 5744 loading data...Good but expensive powder. I didn't load those flying bricks in my45-70s
