I bought a 1970 M-77 RS new in 73. It was my intention to buy a M-70 .270 the hardware store advertised. That's how old I am, you could paint and semi-auto pistols in one stop. Little did I know the wily old gent took advantage of my youth steering me away from the popular .270 to this dog he was stuck with. Unfamiliar w/the .284 caliber he assured me it was a hidden gem and what if he threw in ammo, binoculars and a hard case. Well it didn't take long to snap, that warm fuzzy feeling left after reading popular opinion in the various gun magazines. It's spent it's life in the closet, took it on a mule deer hunt in New Mexico, another story. I'm going to try and shoot some long range events, friend of mine tried to get me involved years ago. Does the M77 have any potential as an F class rifle? .284 6mm?

I haven't priced any of these custom actions or barrels these guys shoot. Calibers run from small wildcats to 300 WM and the various BMG's. I'd like something that can compete but within reason. I've got an Interarms M98 type action in 22-250 screwed to a Douglas barrel and Mc Millan stock. No muzzle brake or other screw ons. Out to 600 yds I wouldn't be shy but 1000 is a another level.

I have shot numerous 1000 yard matches with a 308 and no question the 284 caliber would do fine at that range, have seen some being used as well. Elevation is not the hurdle you have to overcome, but the estimation of wind you are facing is a problem for many regardless of the caliber/firearm. All of my Long-Range matches have been with metalic sight system and not using a rest, only sling prone position is the normal manner for NRA sanctioned matches. Now days with the F class style of shooting (supported fire) at such ranges it is more popular for far easier to perform versus just a sling and micrometer rear an glove front sight. Normal match will consist of 20 rounds, three times and with sporting rifle you may well heat the barrel and cause some accuracy problems. Most matches require a 20 minute time or a shot per minute and some do allow 30 minutes so you have plenty of time to get the rounds off within either time frame. Early on competed in 600 yard matches, but switching to the 1000 yard ones is where you will learn the most in establishing a very stable body position in prone and also learn the right loads for your rifle assuming you reload your ammunition which I would suggest you do. Would add that learning to read the wind will become a valuable thing in such shooting. Give it a try and keep at it for to reach an acceptable level of performance it will take a few matches to get there. Best of luck.

The .284 win really shines in a bolt action with handloads. I had a Savage 99 and later added a Browning BLR in .284 win. Finally realized the shorter actions not allowing a full charge in the bigger, longer bullets made it so I could not get the speed needed to have it at it's peak performance. Settled with 139 gr bullets.

the 284 they are using in a F class is a match chamber and the oal is alot longer than your chamber will probably allow for.
Besides they shoot fairly fast making barrels disposable and it would be ashame to wear that rifle out

I appreciate your input. I knew the barrel was inadequate. I just pulled it out of the closet where it was stored muzzle down and noticed some rust around the crown and sight band. Been there for years w/o a problem. Wicked moisture from the carpet I guess. Man I hate it like a toothache. It was w/o issues.

What little I've shot it the 140 Nosler has been the most impressive. With very little jump
