Low back Security Six

So I found a good deal on a Security Six last month and couldn't pass it up. Stainless 4 inch, pretty much exactly what I wanted in a 357 revolver. Took it to the range and decided the factory wood grips do not go well with hot 357 so I ordered some rubber target grips. Come to find out the grips will not fit and that's when I learned about the low back Security Six.
I tried to modify the rubber grips but that did not work. The only aftermarket grips I can find are the Jay Scott grips but they don't look like they'd make a difference over the factory stocks, they look to be the same size. I can't find a set of the Herretts,which would be perfect, but I'm keeping an eye out. Does anyone here have any suggestions?
Someone on another forum said they modified a set of Pachmayr grips for a Redhawk to fit their low back but I can't get any more info on that. I'd like to know which Pachmayrs (presentation, gripper?) and how it was done exactly but this person hasn't got back to me. I'm thinking about trying these Tuff 1 universal grip covers I saw, I'm thinking if I overlap 2 or 3 it should give me the effect I'm looking for.
Anyone know of some grips I can make fit a low back? I'm not really trying to spend $200 on a set of custom grips.
What's really interesting is it has a 151 SN, just my luck since all the aftermarket grips say to make sure your SN is 151 or higher

Back in the day, there were some Low Back grip choices. After the change to the High Back, replacement grips dried up.

I have some Jay Scott replacements. I don't care for them, but they are substantially thicker. You should try a pair. They may be what you're looking for.

The Low Backs, especially stainless Low Backs, are sought after. Have you considered trading this revolver for an equal revolver of the High Back variety?

You're right. Most Low Backs are 150-series. There was substantial overlap of serial number prefixes during the change from Low Back to High Back. Some of us purposely look for 151-series Low Backs.

Lastly, we'd really like to know the serial number. Leave the last two digits off it it's more comfortable.

Your grip selection will be mighty thin. That's the bad news.
Your stainless LOW back is pretty scarce ( rare? ). That's the excellent news.

The same #8 Tyler T Grip that works on the high backs and Redhawks also fits your gun. I use a Tyler T Grip on my Six Series revolvers.

There's several well respected members here from Ohio. You may get lucky and be close enough to meet up with one of them at a gun show and they might have some grips for your needs.

WAYNO- The Jay Scott's I found on ebay look almost identical to the factory grips, thickness and all. I heard they made over sizes grips too so I'll keep a look out for those. The Herretts are what I'm really looking for. I've thought about trading for a high back or even a different model but due to the rarity I'll probably only do that as a last resort. Worst case I can use it as a glorified 38 special . SN is 151-093xx

Hittman- Thank you! I've been considering the Tyler T's also, I was thinking about the BK Grip it's basically the same thing but cheaper. The only reason I haven't ordered it yet is because the issue for me is more about thickness, I don't get alot of purchase at the bottom of the grip unless I move it more towards the center of my palm where there's no meat lol.

jaybowjm- thanks for the offer but honestly I want to try to find a solution before I go that route. If I do I'd want to trade rather than sell and I'd do it locally here in Ohio.

I'm thinking about trying out these Tuff 1 grips, I'm thinking 2 or 3 overlapped might do the job, kind of like in this picture.

Yes, the BK Grip adapter is about the same as a Tyler.

Grips are a very subjective item …. Whatever works for you. Heck, you may end up buying a couple before you settle on what fits you best. That's the fun of the hobby.

I am a bit insane about collecting the -Six series guns and sometimes get one with aftermarket grips that I remove and replace with factory. I will poke around and see what I can find. Might have a pair of Pachmayers. I think the lowback Pachs do not have a hole in the bottom for reading the SN, that came along later on the highback grips.

over the years we have put in a spacer on each grip panel for some cutomers, use what ever you want, we've used white as well as black material , just trace out the pattern around each grip and fit it accordingly will keep an eye out for any of the Herretts those are my favorites for that model......jsut have given up the ship of that model since they stopped making parts for them or servicing them, I went round and round with the service department years ago.....last Security Six we had to weld up the cylinder and refit it to make it work and sent it along the road....better stuff around today...there was reasons "why" the LE ( PDS ) did NOT take a liking to them and get them for service/duty work...............

That is genius!!! I would have never thought to try and make spacers but that's a really great idea! Yeah it sucks Ruger won't service them, normally I wouldn't mess with a gun that old if it can't be serviced but due to their reputation I figured it's worth it. It locks up like new and it's in great shape so hopefully it will last a long time. Most of my range time is with 38 special anyway, I'll run a few cylinders of magnums but due to ammo prices I try to save the magnums as much as I can.

If you go the spacer route, make sure to use a material that will not absorb moisture. Many years ago I bought a pretty scarce gun that had homemade grip spacers made of some sort of stiff fiber board that retained moisture and under the spacers the grip frame had rusted pretty bad.

Got ya...although I may have just found a solution. Not 100% sure I'm going to do this but if all else fails I found out on another forum the Pachmayr Gripper grips will work on a low back but you have to punch out the grip panel dowel in order for them to fit. I'm not sure I want to start punching out pins but if I absolutely have to I'm sure it'll be fine.

Sorry, I failed. Found 3 pairs of older Security Six Pachs, another 10 Point brand set of rubber, a set of Mustang finger groove zebrawood, and a large set of wood with a RH thumbrest. But none fit the lowback gun. I know for a fact that I have a set of Jay Scott imitation stag lowback grips somewhere, they were factory made with thick spacers, but I didn't see them in the 2 boxes and 3 bags of grips that I looked through. I do remember piling a one cubic foot box full of old Ruger grips a couple years ago, taping it closed, and putting it somewhere for safe keeping... a little too safe it seems.

If you are interested in doing your own grip finishing, I have a set of zebrawood grips for the Six series that can be cut for the low back frame (in fact I already did the outline. I might just be interested. I'm going to be honest I've only ever done basic wood work. I'm good with sanding, staining, drilling, like real basic stuff but I have no idea how to set the little bolt for the screw.

No company out there keeps service parts for long discontinued items. Try getting parts for a Model T car from ford.
Not giving you a hard time,, just pointing out that most often, when looking at older items,, it's either aftermarket, or hand made to fix an issue.

Grips,, as noted,, a spacer can be added, fairly easily.

"I have no idea how to set the little bolt for the screw." Brownells sells a grip screw escuation (spelling) tool that makes it EASY!!!!!! They aren't expensive. Plus,, they also sell the parts & screws. It's not a hard job to do, even for an amateur. And if unclear how to try it,, practice on a few pieces of scrap first.
