I'm a PROUD new owner of a Ruger P-85 Mk11. I've leaned toward Ruger most of my life. My 1st one was in 1999, it was brand new GP 100 6-shot w/ a 4" barrel. I've had other .357's, but for the 1st time I began to run .38cal ammo instead. The size and weight of the gun really compensated the recoil beautifully, unlike the sharp kick with .357 rounds. And honestly I think the differences between .38 & .357 ammunition is very slim. I lost very little power in that switch, but heavily decreased the recoil and report from the gun. I'd even throw some .38 buckshots in there sometimes with every other round being a .38 then a buckshot. If I missed you with the round, the spray on the next shot is going to catch you! Then I broadened my horizons and acquired a Mini-14😉 next. Tactical, with the pistol grip and folding stock. Light brown wooden stock with a mirror like stainless steel for the barrel and parts. I put a leopold scope on it and a Harris bipod. I had 10 30 round clips which I clipped together jungle tape styl, loaded with High Velocity full metal jacket .233 rounds. I can't fathom why that rifle isn't standard issue in the military and even used by snipers on shots up to 3/4 of a mile. I used a friend's suppressor one time and went long distance shooting up NH. For the first time I zeroed in my scope at a distance over 250-300 yards and then something happened that I still can't get my head around…I started hitting shots on target at 1/4 mile, 1/2 mile..I had never shot that distance in my life. I brought the groups into about 4-5 inches at 1/2 mile. With the suppressor off though, I was missing a 3ft x 3ft target every 4 out of 5 shots. So once we left of course I was OBSESSED with getting a suppressor! Problem being is that I dont have a Class 3 license and a suppressor carries up to a life sentence in MA if you get caught with one unlicensed.
SO THIS IS MY QUESTION; What could I possibly use to get the same results I did with the suppressor on???
Also, what choices do I have to mount accessories on my P-85 that bare of rails of course. Does anyone make a add on rail that's held on by the trigger guard? What are you guys thoughts on these things?????

Welcome aboard the Ruger Forum.

I can't help you with the Mini-14 as I don't have one and never shot one.

As for your P85, accessories will be pretty limited. I don't know of many things that clamp to the trigger guard anymore.

However, if you want to think about mounting a mini or micro red dot, EGW makes mounts that mount into the rear sight dovetail.

I recently acquired a P89 upon which I was going to mount a red-dot, but then also picked up a Glock 34 that was optics-ready.

Good luck in your search and congrats on the new-to-you P85.

I just ordered the EGW Mount this morning😂. Funny cause that's all I could come up with as far as rails/accessories. I also ordered a laser sight with the trigger guard mount last week. It's curved so you can mount it at the top of the guard and it will lay flush on the curve under the front of the lower. I f**kin hate laser sights though! Basically a movie prop as far as I'm concerned..if your training at 25ft and zero the laser in at that length then you need to use it sticky situation, you will hit your mark dead on without aiming by painting the target with the laser…if he between 20' to 30' away! If you mis-gauge the length and the targets over 30 feet away, your laser is no longer zeroed in dead balls like at 25'! So you guess the distance, take out your Alan wrench, and zero it in on the active shooter, and take his ass down right??? Lol
I got it cause I couldn't find a trigger mounted flashlight!!! I also just order some nickel plated screws for the lower grip under the Houge Rubber Finger Grips I just put on. Oh and of course I order a magazine with every buy I make for it! I learned to go with the factory 10rd clip with the long plastic base. I ordered aftermarket clips that cause serious cycling issues and could definitely get you killed if you counted on their quality in a dangerous situation. My next question then; what's my best option for a sight to mount up top now???

...SO THIS IS MY QUESTION; What could I possibly use to get the same results I did with the suppressor on???...

Just a guess, but the suppressor you were using might have been exactly the right weight/size to hit some kind of 'sweet spot' in barrel harmonics, with the specific load you were shooting. I'm assuming the muzzle is threaded (since you had a suppressor mounted); if it was me, I might try different non-restricted muzzle devices, and see how each one shot, trying to get something close to the same effect/results.

You might start with something that's similar in weight (& possibly size) to the suppressor you were using - the imitation XM177/CAR15 moderators come in various sizes (5.5" may be the most common), as do various "fake cans". And (obviously) you might start your trials with the same ammo you were using when you got your best results.

But unless you find that 'sweet spot' immediately, I wouldn't stop there - if a muzzle device of any kind was available (from your spare parts box, or a friend's?), I would give it a try, and I would also try any other types of ammunition that you might have on hand, in combination with the different muzzle devices. Basically, just "trial and error", and see how it shoots!

I think @Hvymax might be able to offer more specific advice, based on what I remember from some of his past posts. And welcome to the forum!

A $20 Golf Ball Launcher might help for the weight and balance thing and give you the Silencer look. Bringing a P85 into this Century is doable if you have access to a milling machine etc. With some careful measurements you should be able to mill the slide for a proper dot. For a full size pistol I would go with a larger Doctor optic is faster and easier. Don't waste your money on the dovetail mount. Especially that one. It looks like crap and they may or may not hold zero. For a front rail I would start with rails for the stock AR forend which have the ramped base. Radius the bottom to match your dustcover then set a few steel aircraft rivets to hold it on. You might be better off getting a modern optic ready with a rail but since real guns have hammers the options can be limited. I have a recover grip/rail on my Beretta and love it. It's only available for Beretta 92/96 and1911 though. A little JB Weld or Bondo might make a Beretta recover work. I spray the gun with cooking spray when Bedding things like this.

Did the Silencer you used have a booster? That would dampen the barrel stabilizing the cycles. If you watch a slow motion of a rifle being fired the barrel whips around. If so add a booster to the golf ball launcher. Also barrel temperature is a factor. A barrel doesn't stabilize until warm. People frequently miss during hunting season because they zero during a range session with a warm, fouled barrel and hunt with a clean, cold barrel. In addition to adding stability to the barrel a golf ball launcher is fun with blanks and golf balls.

If that guy is telling the truth he has the most accurate Mini 14 the world has ever seen. 1/2 mile is 880 yards. 4 inch group at that distance is almost unbelievable even with a full blown bolt gun. But a Mini 14? I would have to see it. BTW he could name his price on it and probably get it. No saying it is impossible, but no very probable. If true he needs to weigh that suppressor and measure the length then make dummys and sell them to Mini owners.

I have no experience with the P85 mk ii. I did get to shoot a Mini 14 once. Neat rifle. I was at a friends. We were pinging a 1/3 size steel silhouette targer at 375 yards. Fun. I've never gotten to shoot farther than that.

I do not have a threaded barrel.

The rifle belonged to the friend I was with before me

The rifle belonged to my friend with the suppressor before me so the fact that it was built for a suppressor probably had a lot to do with that incredible session I had with it. Thank you for the info! Do you recommend the ammo I should start to use with a moderator?
