Oh well, another gift from the abroad, last I recall was Dutch Elm disease, then the Emerald Ash borers, and some sort of moth did in our remaining quaking aspens, gotta stay in touch with the Ohio State agricultural team to see whats next ,did get rid of all our 'hogweed' and the the neighbors kids 'wild hemp', so we are good to go with whats left down to about one acre of "woods".........and scattered cherry and apple and LOTS of white pines, and yes they had a beetle?? brown spots?? a few years ago.......only thing I know and do with tress is cut them down, cut them up, give it all away , and burn the limbs ,yes got a gas log fireplace, we'll leave it at that..........I am NOT a "woodworker"????:cool:;)

And yet you found it necessary to comment on a thread asking for help in identifying a type of wood. Good job.

Have lot of original walnut 10/22 stocks, one I even bought through this site. Beautiful wood/grain and heavier. I did screw up and bought a recent Sporter stock that is birch with the rubber recoil pad. My 76 Sporter has the walnut stock and a couple of my mid 60's have the walnut.
The birch to me are just blah. Last picture is a walnut stained birch Marlin Carbine stock.

I believe the DSP (Deluxe Sporter) models have always been walnut.

Jim
I'm thinking the vendor listed it as Deluxe Sporter walnut, but it is in fact not walnut. My bad for not checking the pictures closer. Ruger offers several different stocks for the Sporter. Probably why I didn't pay a fortune for it. ;)
  • StockBeech Sporter w/ Checkering
  • StockHardwood Sporter
  • StockAmerican Walnut

moparclan,

Yes, I now know that the Sporter does come in different stock materials. Thanks

I don't know what species of elm we had in our yard, but we had it taken down around 1985 or so. Somebody came by and asked for the wood for firewood, which he was welcome to. They had one very hard time splitting that wood! Once I looked out and saw they had two wedges, their axe, and sledge hammer all bound up on a piece of limb, and two eight foot long 2x4s trying to lever it apart. And that limb was popping like fireworks!

This was not made from that tree, but it is elm.

It is the type of elm that old cough syrup was made from, and is usually called "slippery ellum."
