Anything I should know about? I used to have a nice Security Six I sold and now wish I hadn't. So, I'm thinking about replacing that with a GP 100 in .357 w/4.2" barrel. I prefer blued guns, so I know I will need to do some looking. I'm asking to find out if there is anything I need to watch out for in buying a used one. They are supposed to be nearly indestructible, so shouldn't be an issue buying a used one?

I prefer the Six Series but you can't go wrong with a GP.
Never had a problem with any of mine.
Some here had issues with the 22LR model I think.

Look for one built about 7-10 years. I handled one last week that had issues with fit and finish, I made a couple mental notes and went home and looked at mine. Mine was a lot nicer pistol.

Heck I'm on the hunt for 1 or 2 blue GPs myself ….. lemme know if you find a 3 inch or a half lug 4 inch you're not interested in buying.

Those blue Six Series guns are still very plentiful. Put a WTB in the Classifieds here.

Nothing wrong with the GP100 at all. Strong, well-built gun. If you like the Security Six you had, the GP may be a bit of a let down. The size of the SS is so much more appropriate for the 357 round. IMO, The GP is kinda big for the 357. You may want to replace the SS instead. But if you do go GP, look for an older one as advised above.

Thanks, this one made me think. I really did like my Security Six, and I think I'd rather try to replace that one. I have heard that they don't stand up well to a steady diet of full bore .357s, and that that is the reason for the GP 100, any truth to that?

In my opinion, I think the GP100 was made more to compete with the Smith & Wesson 686, a little larger and heavier than the Security Six. While I once owned a Security Six and was happy with it, I quickly moved on to the GP100 when it was introduced. I liked the larger size and more robust design of the GP, like the front crane lock etc. My revolver is used primarily at the range. If I carried mine in a holster I might be more inclined to own the smaller framed Security-Six.

I've never heard of a Ruger Security-Six NOT being able to handle a lot of full power loads. Now,, the S&W M-19 is known to have that affliction.

Yeah, there's some things you don't hear about Rugers ….. like going out of time, or shooting "loose" and side plate screws falling out, etc. (y)

It is my understanding the Six series was too expensive to build which equates to less profit. When I run across a Six series at a good price I usually get the urge to purchase. A very under appreciated series.

My Match champion is in the "never sell" pile. A little polishing on the internals and a set of springs gave me a great trigger. It's a strong accurate revolver that carries well in a simply rugged holster. I highly reccomend the GP100.

I will agree with most of the previous opinions, concerning the weight of the GP versus the older Sixes. "Blocky" might be the best description I can find for the GP; great gun but it's noticably bulkier. I had a 6" full-lug stainless version, which weighed about 65 pounds, as I recall;) I would go with one if I could find a 3" or 4", maybe with the half-lug to make it carry-friendly. In finest Ruger Forum fashion, you just need to buy a GP and a Sixer!

My full lug 6 inch also feels awful nose heavy. The 3 inch is the best choice for me in the GP but I still prefer the Six Series.
