Looking for some suggestions for a scope. I want something smaller and lighter. Uses would be deer hunting (within 200 yrds) and range shooting. The way the world is going now, I would also like to know it would be more efficient in cases of national emergencies/crisis. For the last reason I want the scope lighter to keep the rifle more manageable.

thanks

Burris used to make a fixed 4X Timberline model. Not too expensive and really compact. I have them on a few Minis and Model 96. A little hard to find but not too much $$$.

Well, I'm a VORTEX fan and I'd recommend a VORTEX Crossfire II 2-7x32. Lighter than the LVPO type scopes, bright, clear optics, and bulletproof warranty. Price can run from $100-130 depending on where you buy. I've used them on several different type or caliber rifles and never felt 'under scoped'. For the 7.62x39. it is all the magnification you'll need and the 2-7x32 is my favorite for cartridges in the under 300 yard category.
This is what I use on my AR 15 coyote calling rifle. Several times I've had 'shooting light' 15-20 minutes after the other shooters turned thumbs down because they could no longer see crosshairs or identify targets.

Isn't that Vortex a rimfire scope? That is what i see when i search for that scope as I am a fan of that exact magnification and was going to purchase based on your recommendation..

Am I missing something?

I use a standard 3x-9x 40mm on both of my American Ranch rifles (7.62x39 and .300 AAC), as I've hunted with that style for so long I've come to think of them as normal.

"You're comparing apples to oranges. But I can honestly say, if you like the VORTEX 2-7x32 Crossfire II and have the budget to buy one (or a dozen), knock yourself out!"
The VORTEX Crossfire II is a $100-125 scope. Most recent price I saw on Weaver V-3 was almost $200. Sorry if I miscommunicated.

The Weavers have been out of production for I don't know how long; the last V3 I bought was just over a hundred bucks used. I assumed based on the Vortex web site that a new Cossfire II was more than that.

More to the point, the OP suggested he was looking for something "smaller and lighter", that would be used at ranges under 200 yards. The Weaver is on the smaller and lighter end of scopes I've used (and consider reliable enough to recommend), with magnification that's likely appropriate for the use specified. The Vortex is 30% larger than the Weaver, and weighs almost twice as much (it's in the same size & weight range as a lot of 3-9x variables). It also covers a different magnification range than the Weaver: comparing a small, lightweight 1-3x variable to a medium-sized 2-7x, is about like comparing the 2-7x to a 4-16x varmint scope - apples and oranges.

As always, IMHO, FWIW, YMMV, etc., etc.
:)
