I have a '66 carbine International and I'm swapping out the stock to preserve the Mannlicher. I ordered a walnut stock from Macon stocks in Mo. They come unfinished and needing some additional inletting which I'll be doing for the first time over this winter. I got Tru Oil to finish the new stock with when it's ready.

The International wood is in pretty good shape considering it's age and don't plan on doing much to it. I was thinking about just a good cleaning and wondering if I can put a couple of coats of Tru Oil on top of that as well. Anybody know what the original finish on these stocks is and if Tru Oil will work well or possibly harm the factory finish? It looks to these untrained eyes to be a semi gloss oil finish but I'm not sure. Thanks

You really need to determine whether this gun had and oil finish or a varnish clear coat. All of the .44 carbines I have owned seem to have had a light oil finish -- none were glossy. I have actually used True Oil on a .44 carbine and it came out fine.
