I'm sure someone could order a barrel blank, fit it up and tune the gas port appropriately for a few thousand dollars. No problem. A 350 Legend would be a great caliber as well.

Title of the thread reads (RAR). Seems pretty straight forward.

What is the cost of a new barrel vs buying a rifle like you want in the first place? Throwing money at a budget rifle doesn't make a lot of sense to me. By the time upgrades are done you could have afforded quite a bit nicer of a rifle to begin with…

To funny! A new barrel 5R rifling 1:8 twist-match for a RUGER AMERICAN RANCH bolt action rifle (RAR) in 5.56mm is $320-750 (depends on brand).

Pros:

1. Greater accuracy
2. Increased energy from 100 to 200 yards (900 - 1000 lbf)
3. 223 & 5.56mm pressures no issue
3a. .223 low velocity in the RAR up to 550 FPS loss
4. Hogs down @50-300

Cons:

1. Heavier, unbalanced (could counter since butt is hollow)

I can't find a 20-24" Wylde match chamber bolt action rifle for under oh lets say $1200

You've probably already seen them, but it might be worth reading through threads like this one:

IIRC, the barrel you order for your RAR may be influenced by the type of magazine your rifle uses, etc. (at least in some calibers). Lots of good info, and it looks like the guys are happy to answer questions!

Are you going to gain anything over just finding a suitable action and barrel to start the 'build' with? Beginning a project with a 'price point' rifle just to harvest the action is questionable. I've tried that when parts and machine work were far less costly and found it often cost more than other options.

I love the Ruger American platform, light/darn near precision with some mods and modified it to my desired performance.

I am pondering the 6mm Predator as an alternative, weight (1lb +)/action/lbf all appear to be well within my needs @ the same price point of any barrel upgrade to the RAR. Ammo is more $ but 2 boxes is all I need a year. Wife says sell one of my rifles and get the barrel or the 6mm, you know how it is I hate to part with any of them. We shall see.

thx sir!
