The Sheriff's model 44 special is one gun I always wanted and never got. I started looking around for one the other day. I know everything is high these days but my goodness the few I saw were extra high. I guess they command that price because there were not a lot of them made. I always thought one in a nice cross-draw holster would be a good woods walking gun.

It should be a good woods walking gun. I am embarrassed to say I don't even have a holster for mine.... . I usually just hang a 5 1/2" revolver on my pants belt, or strap on the gun belt. Hope you can run into one at a reasonable price.

I had a Colt Sheriff's Model in 44 Special. Nice gun but was a pain to eject empties. I shot it a couple of times and put it away. Too slow for EDC and too inaccurate for field carry. Converted on of my 49 Colt Ruger OM Birdsheads to a Bisley grip and it made one heck of a bear gun (never used it on bears but felt safe carrying it)

Add-0n: That Ruger also had a Bisley hammer.

I have never noticed trouble ejecting empties, but it does take some time to find a load that will shoot to the sights. But that is the case with most of the fixed sighted single actions.

However it is such a dream to carry, and is so small and sexy compared to it's 3-1/2" Bisley big brother.

One thing I learned that day, is that it is much easier to keep brass separated when you don't bring 44 w.c.f., 44 special and 45 Colts all out on the same day!

Also you should be aware, the blue models have a more narrow grip frame than the stainless. The stainless feels different in my hands than the blue models. At first I thought is was all in my head, but I checked and sure enough the stainless are wider.

I adjust the gun to shoot to the load I want to shoot. For example, all I shoot out of my .44 Specials in the Skeeter load. If barrel needs clocked, it is clocked. If front sight needs filed down, it is filed down. Unfortunately I have to live with the gun shooting high as the factory front sight isn't tall enough <sigh> . But I figure at the distance the sheriff is intended for, not a big deal to shoot a bit high. I've got my other .44s to shoot exactly to POA.... I just wish the factory would always put to tall front sights on the fixed sighted revolvers and let the 'user' adjust as needed.

You might be comparing apples and oranges: The New Vaquero and Flat top Blackhawk mid size frames to the Blackhawk and original Vaquero full size frames.

The New Vaquero and Flat top Blackhawk mid size main frames, both blue and stainless have XR3 size grip frames that are 7/16" thick. Blackhawk and original Vaquero full size frames have XR3-RED size grip frames that are 1/2" thick.

I have a couple of the New Flattops - one in 45 Colt and the other in 44 Special. I like them, but I have never warmed up to them like I have my New Vaquero 45 Colt and this 44 Special. Something about the classic Colt style single action with fixed sights just sits well with me.

And I agree - I wish Ruger would put out more 3" single actions. I just have that Lipsey Bisley shorty and that Sheriff. And I would love to have another - or two - or three....

And I never saw one in a gun shop. I only looked at them at Buds. I've looked the last few times I was at a gunshow also and have not seen one. That tells me the people that have them like them and don't often sell them.

I have had multiple Sheriff's, Montado's, or other distributor-exclusive revolvers, in most of the expected chamberings. For no good reasons, I no longer own most of them.

I do however own .44 Magnum and .45 ACP revolvers in the 3-3/4" barrel length, and they've become my most shot and most carried SA revolvers.

Any such revolver in .44 Special is... Special.
