The Old Model 3 screw Supers had what we call "The Dragoon"
Like these.

You can see from the top picture of the Colt 1847 Walker where the name came from
The 1st 2nd and and I believe the 3rd Model Colt Dragoons (nope it was round) also had the square back trigger guard. The Ruger frame is the same size as the Colt.

Got that thanks but, are they XR3 frames with a squared TG or bigger?

When introduced the Super Blackhawk was given a different designed g/f than the XR3 of the Flattop Blackhawk type. We all call it the Dragoon type, as shown in the top picture. Nothing like the XR3. And in the early years,, there was also a "Long Frame" design of the Super g/f as well. Those are quite collectable.

BUT,, the first .44 Blackhawks,, WERE shipped with the XR3 g/f. But they are NOT Super's.

Not to confuse things but the SBH with a 7.5" or longer barrel ships with the above described "Dragoon" all steel gripframe

Any SBH with a barrel SHORTER than 7.5" ships with an all STEEL gripframe with a round trigger guard and is of the XR3-RED configuration but most will not have the XR3-RED casting number on the gripframe

Also be aware if you are involved with a "distributor" sponsored weapon tread carefully as the distributor "may specify" parts that vary from the normal

How do you like shooting them? My friend had one in 44 magnum and now regrets selling it.

OK... here is another question: I'm sure everyone knows but me--were any Old Armys made with XR3 frames and/or can XR3 frames be used on them?

1. No. Old Armys used only one grip frame, the XR3 RED size. The early blue guns had an alloy GF. Beginning 1985 it's marked XRN-3, is made of steel with wide trigger slot, and is the only old model GF in carbon steel other than the SBH. It's marked KXR-3 in stainless. To this day the Old Army grip frame has not changed and will fit any old model Ruger.

2. Yes the old model XR3 alloy grip frame will interchange. The New Model XR3 size steel and stainless steel GF will fit the Old Army (and any old model Rugers) but needs two slight modifications to function. For details just ask.

Perfect answer, thanks. Disappointed because it's another one that I have to find an XR3 frame for.
