First time hammer swap

These are addictive guns. I can resist them. I like the idea of extras because I may send a few off for engraving.

Note the new hammer. This hammer swap took me a while. It was my first time. I had difficult getting the trigger pin out and didn't want to mar the frame. I figured it out. My Lyman took kit came in handy as I used four different punches and two different screw drivers.

My first pair of 5.5" new vaqueros came with these hammers, which is why I bought them, and I plan to switch all of mine over for identical feel. I have five at the moment—two 7.5" to do. I'll make someone happy when I die as they will all be perfect.

I thought it best to get it completed as I found the Blackhawk hammer in a plastic bag in my puppies mouth. What'cha got there? Whoa your horses! Give me that!

I ordered two of these hammers and one is still missing. I have two more to do as a friend sold me a 7.5" new vaquero for $725 with shipping. So I have an old and a new vaquero in 7.5". Cool. I can shoot heavy loads if I go to bear country.

So since I'm missing a hammer I just ordered two more SBH hammers off Brownelll's to finish those off and still hope the other hammer turns up as it will go on a 3.5" barrel birdshead someday.

The price for the hammers went up. They arenow $33 each. I don't recall what I paid for the last ones. 20 something. They are in stock at Brownells if you are interested.

I'll post a video of the next hammer swap I do. I expect I can now do the swap in 10-15 minutes.

I put a Bisley hammer in my standard grip frame. I modified a stock one instead of buying the Power Custom kit.

As an instructor,, I tell handgun students,, "A gun should fit YOU and YOUR hands." A hammer swap, or a different set of grips are things that often make a big difference in how a gun fits someone.

I have done three out of four; just better feel with the low hammer.

Alan Harton made these Super hammers from Old Army and Super Hammers.
I wanted a lower hammer which is easier for my short thumb to reach while shooting one handed in SASS matches. They were a few $$$$ more than a stock new model hammer

I like those hammer spurs on Harton's ROA, and was always puzzled why Ruger doesn't make something similar on their DA revolvers.

I wanted 44 Magnum Bisley, stainless, with fluted cylinder, and the only way to have it was to get stainless Bisley Vaquero and stainless SBH with 5.5" barrel, and swap parts. What's left was Vaquero with SBH hammer. I didn't need it so I contacted dealer in Thunder Bay. He said "bring it for consignment" and I did, worrying that it will take a long time to sell such odd revolver. It was sold in few days! Later on I learned that one very popular upgrade on cowboy shooting revolvers is to install SBH hammer on Vaquero.

Talking about low hammer, if you ever see Webley WG, especially with birdhead grip, take it in your hand. You will be amazed with ergonomics of that revolver:

Ronnie made this tool that is simple & easy and virtually no mess up's, if your going to service your own Ruger NM Single Actions you should have one.

When Ruger introduced the special run of New vaquero Montados with its checkered and bordered wide spur Super BH hammer I ordered a bunch from Ruger parts department. Glad I did because they weren't available very long. Being a mid frame size hammer they were a drop in fit on my new vaqueros and NM flattop Blackhawks. What an improvement!

Totally agree. When I first got my old model Vaquero I found the "thumb reach" a bit unnatural and the serrated trigger uncomfortable. The Super Blackhawk hammer and trigger solved this problem. Now if ammo wasn't soooo pricey!

My .45 ACP Birdshead came with the SBH hammer and it's perfect

I added one to my .357 Blackhawk and I can't imagine the gun without it.

My Bearcat Shopkeeper has the mini version of the SBH hammer, and it's also perfect.
