I found a few powders @ Cabelas today. I bought 2 lbs Accurate #9. It used to be AA#9. Then Western Powders labeled it. Now, Hodgdon is making it. I called a technician this afternoon. He said use same load. Same powder. I like it in .41M., .44M. 45 Colt.

I'm a big fan of Accurate #9 myself. My late mentor convinced me early in January 2011 to start out with two powders that would get me started with handgun loads .... Unique and A2400. Considering the time in history, being a just little less "stressful" than today, A2400 was no where to be found around here. So looking at the manuals I found that AA#7, like Unique, would work for both 9mm and .357 mag that I was starting with, so that's what I initially bought. Later was able to get that 2400, but also found that AA#9 was real close in performance (and load values) ... since then (2012) I've developed the habit of keeping 5-6 cans of AA#9 in reserve instead of 1 or 2. Works extremely well in my .357 mag and .44 mag Rossi R92 leverguns ... and gets "tested" in them at least once a week. I also keep a good stash of the other AA pistol powders, AA#2, AA#5 and AA#7.

I think AA#9 is a bit more forgiving and/or has more latitude in loading vs the hotrod H110/Win296. I was looking for a powder with a "wider window of application" and #9 seems to fit.

I tried AA#9 in .45 Colt and didn't like it. From 15.5gr to 19.0gr under a 255gr SWC . Tested with CCI-300 and CCI-350 with same results. I've got "Very Position Sensitive" marked for up to 17gr. My Extreme Spreads were over 100fps to 179fps (over 15 shots per test) which is unacceptable to me. Looks like that was the only cartridge I tested. I think I used the rest as fertilizer. I suspect if used in .44 Magnum the results would be different as you could really get the pressure up for this slow powder. Now AA#2 I like in .32 H&R Magnum, AA#5 I like in most all the different cartridges I load for. AA#7 was okay in the .44 Special. All of them meter really well.

I love and use the Accurate 5, 7, and 9. They shoot clean and meter well. I also recently picked up the new Western load book… a must-have, imo.
