Too many calibers to keep on hand. A girl friend won a Winchester 70 in a raffle 50 years ago. Folks told her to get it in .243 or .256. I said .270 or 30-06 since she did not plan to hunt. Do not shoot it and sell it NIB. She did and made a few dollars.

I just remember Captain Bluntschli in Shaw's "Arms and the man". The Bulgarian attack but the wrong ammunition has been provided to Bluntschli's machinegun detachment. They can only run away

Did Smith make a 29 dash 2 with a 3" barrel?
I hope so, cuz that means I'm missing one and I get to go on a hunt to 'add' to the collec, err, accumulation.
There were several made. The 29-2 3 inch was a non catalogued item, I have seen several at the Ohio Gun Collectors shows. If you walk the tables you can find one displayed.
Product # 101224 and Special Order # 5329 was made in 1985 in a run of 200. I have one in Nickel, but not pinned and recessed.
There was also the 29-1 Lew Horton guns., a run 0f 200

Sig 226(9mm) w/ hi cap mags
12 GA pump of good quality.
22 lever, pump or bolt rifle (not semi)
Semi-auto rifle,7.62x39(mini-30?)

Four is enough.

When Bill Jordan was asked if he could have only ONE gun,he said " a .22 rifle"

Okay I think I have this one covered.

1. 1911 of your choice-Got a SR 1911 5" barreled .45
2. .357 Mag revolver. - The only revolver I own is a Dan Wesson .357 with a 4" barrel.
3. AR-15 or AK-47 - For me it is AR-15. I put together a kit from PSA several years ago.
4. 10/22 or .22 lr pistol - I missed out on the 10/22 but I do have a couple of different versions of a Marlin model 60 & a Glenfield 25 bolt action .22. I guess a Buckmark Camper covers the .22 lr pistol.
5. 12 gauge pump-I guess a Mossberg model 500 qualifies.

I like having pistols and a revolver around that will shoot 9mm, .40, .45 acp., .357 Magnum & .38 Special. While there are a couple I shoot a lot more than the others I think it increases the odds of finding ammunition I can use. I also think if one is serious about hunting it is good to have a centerfire bolt action rifle around. I like my .30-06 but lately I've been kind of wanting a .308 just because .308 ammunition seems to be easier to find. None of my stuff is the nicest but it is all functional.

Centerfire Rifle - 45/70 Ruger No.1 or a lever-action depending on where you live and if really need a fast second shot. Can load high or low power, too!
I like you No1 idea. I've got enough to cover several situations.
1A-7x57 - handy and light to pack around
1B-300WinMag - able to reach out and touch someone
1H-458WinMag - able to stop a car
1RSI-30-06 - another handy to carry with more stopping power
1S-7mmRemMag - best for long range
1V-.223 - plenty of ammo
K1V- 22-250Rem - in case the weather is bad

The list is close to perfect.

In my mind once the OP decided on the 10/22, the list needs a mini14, or M1A. Not an AR and certainly not an AK.

My list would have a Marlin 39 on it, so a 30/30 would be a strong contender, but I'd probably go with a .357 lever gun to match the revolver.

So my Five

Marlin 39. .22
Rossi 92 .357
S&W 627 .357
1911. .45
Remington 870 12 gauge.

I hope I am never limited to just 5, but this is a pretty good thread
1. Ruger 10/22
2. Glock 19
3. Rem 700 customized 223
4. Rem 700 customized 308
5. Rem 870 12ga
Sure hate I had to leave an AR15 and Ruger KMK512 out. Would miss my PDW 9mm too. And all the Flattops

Good list. Got some of the bases covered including a 700, R/A rimfire in 22 mag, 1 9MM S&W chief special. Gotta add that Rem 870 and am looking at the new Fieldmaster 870 in 12 gauge. Priced at $500 most places. Not exactly a Wingmaster but improvement over that Express.

you forgot zip gun
.357 revolver and a Marlin in same caliber is all I would require. A pump 12 gauge might be added. Simplifies ammunition reloading and completely adequate for any personal or home defense. Jeff Cooper (praised be his name) once wrote that he knew of no LEO or personal defense confrontation that required more than two rounds of 12 gauge expertly delivered.

IMHO this 5 gun battery doesn't take in to consideration that there are handgun guys, rifle guys and shotgun guys. If you fall into that category you probably have more than 5 guns in which ever category plus the other "necessities" of life. I'm not sure it's possible to only have 10 guns. I don't think I'm unusual, there are lots of folks who haven't responded.

Nope I don't think you are. And I'm guessing lots of folks haven't replied because most have them do have those 5 guns or an equivalent there of.

Now if it were say "5 Rugers every American should own" to cover that ideology it'd be a different story. I'm willing to bet the majority have never even held or shot a Red Label, much less owned one. ;)

So I've held off posting on this but I think it's time. The list is pretty good. But I take exception to the AR-15/AK-47. The first is the worst thing ever foisted upon American military personnel. The second is woefully lacking in accuracy as a general rule.

I submit that either an M-1 Garand or a civilianized version of the M-14 are far superior in terms of reliablity, accuracy and effectivness.

I disagree with the analogy of the AK. I know that not all of the 58,000 + service men that were kill in Vietnam didn't succumb to wounds from the AK but a good majority did. I can hit a small paper plate easily at 100 yards with both of mine and have never had a malfunction that wasn't ammo's fault. I have had many stoppages with AR's. I agree with what you said about the Garand and M14
