This is what I understand. When the new administration came into office one of the first things they tried to do was get the mil surp brass destroyed and sold for scrap. After some complaints the DoD rescinded that order. Fine. Now this. The DoD needs to issue a new order specifying the brass be sold to Government Liquidators as it was before.

The primer, ammo, powder shortages and price increases are a combination of several things. First, the long running wars in the middle east. Second, panic buying. Third, the manufactures are running at full production but don't want to add capacity because the demand will go down again as we are seeing now. Price increases have been caused by metal price increases and increased demand. Things are slowly getting back to normal.

mattsbox99,

The white boxes of Winchester 5.56 ammo (with the lot number on the end of the box: Q3131A1) is 100% made in Isreal. This is a fact that most AR-15 guys know. Do a google search if you don't believe me. Also, I didn't say that ALL of winchester ammo was made overseas....just the stuff that I stated. Go to AR15.com and look up the ammo thread if you can't find anything with a google search.

So, you think ALL winchester ammo is made in the states....that is funny!

There are more differences between .223 and 5.56 than you have mentioned...who cares?

Do you think that if an American bought a mad stash of military brass that just because that person is an American that they would be an automatic angel? You are cracking me up. Dr. Theodore John Kaczynski (the unabomber) was an American......along with countless other nuts like him as well. Take a look at the thugs in our prison system. Where do those folks come from, Mars? I didn't suggest that it was likely for a nut to obtain mass amount of brass at a government auction but rather suggested that it would be probable (which it would be). Please explain how you could prove to me otherwise.

Anyway, you said that I had numerous errors in my post. Why, because I called the armed American a militia? That's funny too...I thought that the 2nd amendment names us gun owners as such.

Nice try.......

Whats really humorous is that you are still just wrong on so many accounts. We aren't even talking about winchester brass, all US Military .223/5.56 and .308 ammo is made at Lake City Arsenal in Lake City, Utah. A factory owned and operated by ATK. All Winchester ammo is still made in Illinois, the stuff you are quoting is made by IMI in Israel and packaged in Winchester boxes. IMI is owned by the American Gov't too, we pay for virtually everything that Israel needs and does.

I'll have to be 100% honest with you here but I've got to say that you are coming across as kind of a d-bag. You have more than complete rights to not agree with me but you can be civil about it. Try taking the high road once in a while....it feels good. We just don't see eye-to-eye on this, that is plain and simple. I'm not going to say much more about all of this this out of fear that you will take another one of my statements and twist it completely out of context, in an attempt to make youself look superior.

I don't respect those who slash at others who don't think 100% as they do. I have already stated that I had made some comments "tongue and cheek" while playing devil's advocate, for the sake of discussion. Just my two cents, though.

Nice, call me a d-bag after you have insulted me numerous times and filled this thread with totally worthless posts. Normally I do not care what bad information people spread, but you have continually barfed it up for no reason other than to satisfy yourself. Hope you are happy.

Sorry I haven't been back to check on this, but ATK has rescinded their plan to steal from the taxpayers and has issued an apology.

Thanks for the posting. It is good to know that a little public pressure from the right people can get things back to the way they are supposed to be. :D

Made by IMI and Winchester corp is nice enough to allow them to sell the item using their registered trademark... Sorry but my disbelief suspension switch doesn't have a high enough setting to buy that one.

I don't know enough about it to say if all that was said here is true or not. I do know this about the American market place. If someone tried to hold primers or other components off the market to create a shortage and drive up the price, there would always be someone willing to fill that market need. Also if a company decides to hold military calibers off the market, civilians would quit shooting that caliber and go to one more available. That would make it more expensive to build guns and ammunition of that caliber because the military contracts are not enough to keep them afloat. Just ask Colt. So everything you do that starts out with nefarious intent creates other circumstances that can come back on you.

Wow, Jimbo....that was an eye opener....seeing all of those companies that you have listed. I would like to see how this one ends up.
Do you think this may have been resolved since the story is dated 2010?
I haven't been able to find any updated info on this.
I've emailed the author of the article, (he's still listed w/Montana shooting Sports Association) asking if if he has an update. I'll post a reply, if any.

Well, one relevant tidbit is that ATK spun off their small arms ammunition division in 2015 to become Vista Outdoors. The current market is their wet dream: continued high demand and scarcity leading to extended high profit margins.

And to be extra clear, "our buddy" Jason Vanderbrink has been high up in the ammunition management for both rounds of this.

I take exception to the apparent thought that American civilians are a group of suspicious anti-American revolutionaries. From my perspective, this seems to be a conspiracy to bypass the intent of the regulations requiring spent brass to be sold to the highest bidder.

brass is brass. the military has been recycling it for years. we were told we werent allowed to dumpster dive for it for loading or resale. but heads and eyes were turned skyward while whistling if it was for your use only.

Lake City Ammunition is in Independence, MO. Started in 1941. Never was in Utah. Remington Arms ran it in 1941. Winchester now has it. A tornado ripped just to the North of the plant a week ago. Son in law was there that morning. 1:30 AM.
