I have a new to me 77 MkII in 338 WM. The scope I want to run is a 30mm tube with a 50mm objective. It looks like it takes 2 different ring heights. Leupold shows a set for the M77, but it doesn't specify if they are 2 different heights. Is the tang Safety model different or the same as far as rings are concerned?? Leupold states the "mediums" are .900". Will that be enough for a 50mm lens??

I just set up a 77 mkll 338wm with skeleton stock. I used Ruger rings high and extra high with a 44 mm obj scope. I have plenty of room. You might want to call Ruger and ask them according to serial number what you need

I know this isn't exactly the same setup, but I have medium leupold dual dovetail rings on my x-bolt .338wm with 30mm/50mm Zeiss scope. There's prob 3/16" of room above the barrel.

Describing a scope in a box and a rifle on a rack isn't going to get you where you need to be. I've mounted a lot of scopes over the past 50 years and due to the variety of scope designs/dimensions, there's no way to say what will fit.
Many of the current scopes have a very short mounting area(especially the 50mm objective models). Getting a short body scope fitted on a long action rifle may require extended rings or an add-on rail between rifle and rings.

In scope swapping on a MkII 7 mag with medium 1" rings; it seems a 40mm is OK , but a 44mm is too large and needs high rings.

I dug thru some stuff and found conversion bases to Weaver rings. I put the base convesion on with medium Weaver rings and everything is a go. If I have Low rings I would give that a try as I might be able to get by with Low rings with the bases.
