Own property way up in the northern Adirondacks but am not a resident. Which maker has a New York SAFE act compliant AR-type 5.56/.223 rifle that I can take with me and use there?

I see terms like fixed mag, 10-round, no pistol grip under, etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if even a picture of an AR is illegal in New York. The things you mentioned might be good enough. A 'California style' notta magazine release and a 'featureless' non-adjustable buttstock could do it for you. Both are easy to install and reversible.

I don't know the answer to your question but …. Maybe call a gun store local to your property there? Ask them what's legal and maybe what they have for sale.

A quick search turns up that substituting Thorenson stock is the predominant method to become " featureless " , and thereby exempt from the otherwise burdensome requirements to be NYS compliant .

But it's ugly and unwieldy enough to make you think hard about going non AR for a .223 carbine .

I wonder if the Mini 14 is legal in NY.
They're not cheap but the Remington 7615 Police pump uses AR magazines.

Found out Ruger gave up trying to do one that complies. Turns out there are gun shops in NY that specialize in doing the one fix that makes a "standard" AR type rifle compliant. Permanently fix a 10 round mag so it is nonremovable by the owner. Rotate the works to load from above. With this mod, one can be considered compliant, even though it has all the "bad" features: adjustable stock, pistol grip, and muzzle flash suppressor.

I wonder what the capacity of AR's in NY is, carried by LEO's in the state? What features do those have?

I would buy or take a henry, marlin 1894 or winchester 92 chambered in .357magnum, 44 magnum or 45 colt. They are just as effective as an AR and no one will have an issue with an evil black rifle.

I remember, I shipped one Ruger Mini 14 with two five round mag. to the dealer in New York. The best way contact dealers in your area you are going, they should know, AR 15 and Mini 14 are the same category. You may have to find 5 rounds mag for AR 15.

Windham Weaponry makes a NY State compliant AR, link below. The owner of Windham Weaponry used to own Bushmaster before the freedom group bought it.

I also have property in NY way up north, in Tupper Lake, and am interested as I would like to bring my mini-14.
