I have a question on Disassembly of my Circa 2011 Ruger SR1911 Standard Full Size 45ACP Pistol.

Why can't you just align and push out the Slide Stop Pin and remove the Slide off the Frame?
Bushings, Spring, Internal Recoil Spring Guide, are all self contained on the Slide. I can not
understand why this can't be done this way? I there something dangerous I don't understand?
The Spring is a 16 pound replacement.

This will be the second time I've Disassembled this Pistol and cleaned it. Just Oil and Shoot. There is
approximately 300 plus rounds through it. The SR1911 just keeps shooting trouble free.

I wanted to see how just trouble free it is, I'm bored now. I don't shoot SR1911 very much. I like this
Pistol that's why I bought, just like my Revolvers better. That's why such a long time between cleanings.

I am a S&W Revolver guy. This SR1911 is the only 1911 I have. I am very Mechanically Inclined, so
that's why I'm asking this question.

Now....I have been studying the SR1911 Owner's Manual and did a Search here.

Please give me insight as to why do it by the Manual. Thank you in advance for your help.

I just push the slide back and pop the top off after I am sure the gun is unloaded and mag is out of course. Also good to put on safety glasses. Now I know given others hand strength this may not be possible for all. Also one needs to keep their thumb under the spring to be sure it does not fly off.

Here is a utube from Wilson Combat on pretty much how I do it.

dakota1911 - Thank you so much for your informative Reply and
Do It Yourself video.

I will have to try the Slide from Frame separation on the Disassembly.
I have a feeling that putting it back together might be challenging.
We will see.

Probably will assemble per the Owner's Manual, as, not to scratch
the interior of the Dust Cover with the flexing Spring.

Thank you!

Update. Thanks dakota1911 for the Encouragement.

Well I got the 2011 Ruger SR1911 45ACP Full Size Pistol all cleaned up.

I Disassembled taking the Slide with all on it (Bushing, Barrel, Spring Cap,
Spring, Spring Guide).

Wow! That was easy, and quick way to separate Slide
and Frame. Then just took the Slide apart.

I could see controlling the Spring and no catch Spring Guide would be a problem.

I decided to put the Slide back on per the Owner's Manual; not as one Unit.
I believe It is just easier that way.

In closing; I learned Disassembly taking the whole
Slide off or doing it by the Book works. When putting it back
together though, I will do it by the Book.

Thanks for reading about my conundrum.

Before the intergoogle I learned the pop the top off back in the 70s from the "old knowing ones" at ranges and gun stores when I shot bullseye in prep school and college. Had a Colt GCNM with the collet or "finger" barrel bushing and was told not to turn the bushing when in battery or take them off the barrel. (Still have a "few" of these.) Now with my latest Ruger, a 10mm Target, I don't have to worry as it has no bushing and a FLGR. Not fun to field strip but Ruger gives you the little wire or one could just bend a paperclip I guess.

Still wonder why Ruger went with that design on their 9mm Target. I can sort of see the logic on the 10mm. Below my 2012 SR1911 and my SR1911-10 from the front.

This may help.

Sorry about that dog. There are 24 here. Sometimes one or two get mouthy.

Well ..... lets face it, these guns are 100-plus years old technology. If a fella likes nostalgia in his semi-autos .... this system of take down is what you live with buying a 1911.

There's other options, many of them more convenient and just as reliable.

I used to have an early 70's Dart Swinger too and knew the points, cap, rotor, carb setup was just all part of the nostalgia.

1911Tuner - Thank you for the Video. Wow! that
narrator has tore down a few 1911s. Take down
was so fast and smooth.

Interesting use of a M16/AR15 firing pin.

The cleverness and thought of how this Pistol was
made never ceases to amaze me.

Thanks again for showing me this.

You're welcome. The narrator was me, and yes I have.

The AR15 firing pin's steps are matched to the hole diameters in the 1911 frame, making it a perfect armorer's tool.

Would you like to see my no-tool detail strip video?

Hey thanks again. 1911Tuner - sure would like to see the
No-Tool Smack Down.

This is Great! Being so Mechanically Inclined, it is an excellent
Learning Opportunity. You can Teach this Old Dog new tricks.

Thank you in advance.

The genius of John Browning.

The pistol in this demo is a Norinco.

The originals even had the grip screw slots sized to fit the case rim, and the bottoms of the slots were dished to match the rim's radius so that a cartridge could be used to remove them.

1911Tuner - Thank you so much listening to what I was
asking Originally and showing me 2 Great Videos.

I have heard about the Cartridge Rim for Grip Screws,
and using an empty 45ACP Brass for a Recoil Spring
Cap.

Very interesting! Thank you!

Oh, there's much, much more but it would be off topic for this thread. I'll link you to an article that I wrote in a PM.

Well, I sent the link but it won't leave my outbox.

If the admins are okay with me posting it on this thread, I will.

Awaiting the decision.

It leaves your Outbox and goes to Sent Messages only when he reads it.

If it's off topic, just start a new thread.

Some much appreciated info and videos. I've owned several 1911's over the years and the detail strip was a bit overwhelming for me. I wish I had seen the videos years ago and I would not have gone through the trial and error process. But going forward with this info will make the process much more pleasant. Thanks, 1911Tuner!!
