Anyone here have much, or any, experience with Accurate Arms 5744 powder in handgun calibers? I've been given an unopened plastic can of thish powder. The only data I have for this is for the .44 Magnum. The starting load with a 240 gr. lead SWC is 21.6 grs. for 1272 F.P.S. That's a trifle high velocity for my use as I'm wanting mostly high end target loads, around 1,000 f.p.s. or so. Also maybe for use in .44 Special and .45 Colt?

Bob, I have the Western powders 5.0 edition. It shows Handgun to powder reference for 5744: .357 maximum/ .41 mag /.44 mag/ .45 Colt (14,000 psi) and (30,000 psi) + 454 Casull & other thumpers. Nothing on .44 spl. For .45 Colt it calls for 17.6 grns to 19.5 giving 922 to 1011 FPS under a 255 grn SWC @ 1.604"-Dave

Any particular caliber Bob?

I used to use it a lot in the late 80's early 90's as a substitute for SR4759 when it got discontinued the first time. Just found n 8# jug at old rates so I need to get reacquainted. in my first checks a couple weeks ago older manuals had more info.

No experience with it in any cartridge loads. I use it in my savage smokeless muzzleloaders. Have advice to offer about loading it though. I have yet to find any powder measure that throws it consistently. I always carry extra charges in plastic tubes. I have to weigh each one. Try to throw them and I will be multiple grains different, sometimes by double digits. Typically I can set my measure up and be with a tenth or two, which is close enough, with most any powder.

On the burn rate chart I looked at it falls between 4227 and 1680 and is several powder listings slower than 2400. Appears like a power that would leave a lot of unburned powder in the chamber after firing a load like you are seeking. Should be great for magnum loads with bullets on the heavy side.

You mean that thrown charges are off target by five grains or more? What total charge weights do you use?

Yep,my load was 44 grains. Tried it in a cheap lee measure, little dandy, hornady and a high end harrells precision. Something with the powder would cause it to block up in the drop tube where it went into the measure. One would throw light next one heavy.

When powders come available again, Shooters World "Buffalo Rifle" is the same powder as 5744, only 3/4 as expensive!
Both made by Lovex...
