Speaking of a Mauser. My Dad was very happy hunting with the 98k that he brought back for WWII. He never shot a deer with it as much as I can remember, but he was happy just to have it with him on hunts. For him it was more about getting out in the woods.
I am pretty much the same as MH above, having a M700 30.06 and a 30-30 lever gun. Although last month I added a Ruger Hawkeye Predator 308 for a reasonable price.
First thing I did was accidentally un-cock the bolt while the bolt was out of the rifle. Found a simple way to fix that on YouTube.

I'd probably sell the scope and use one I already have. The scope I have in mind has a 50mm objective, and I'd rather use a smaller profile 40mm so still may need to buy another scope.
I have the chance to buy a Ruger Hawkeye Predator 308 with 22" barrel. It has the adjustable LOP stock. Scope is a Vortex crossfire2 4x12x44. Looks to be in very good condition. Question is what are decent prices for a rifle like this these days? I am working on getting the rifle and scope for 8...
