Unfortunately, used and abused by the media and Hollywood who tried to cast him into an image that was not him. I believe he suffered terrible PTSD. Sad, sad, story IMHO.

Drinking American brews when better beer was available was also something I witnessed when I was stationed in Germany back in the late 60's. You would be surprised at the number of troops who ordered up an American beer rather than drink a real brew. Never understood that.
