Are you talking about the gap between the gas block and the front of the stock? If so, yes, they are there and it's for expansion when the metal gets hot. Some may have smaller gaps but they all have gaps. kwg

I saw lititure on the XGI as early as 1977. The 308 was cracking receivers. That's when they went to the 7.62x39. kwg

I would be concerned that the bolt is not locking into the receiver becuase the op rod and bolt cannot go all the way forward. I think it may also add to reliability issues. I'll pass on doing it. I want the rifle 100% reliable. kwg

I'd stay away from extra power springs. A buffer at the rear is good but not at the front in my opinion. Are you concerned about brass flying so far away or do you have another problem that makes you consider the extra power spring and buffers? kwg

Maybe. did you say it was a target rifle? The target Mini is a 581 series. kwg

I have yet to hear about good magazines for the 7.62x39 in the AR platform. For an American made rifle in 7.62x39 it appears the Mini is the way to go. Since Ruger has to share the Mini 30 with the rest of the free world, they will always be on somebody's waiting list. kwg

If you ever have a problem with a Mini and want to send it back to Ruger for repairs, you may be disappointed. Ruger does not like modifications and will either take the gun back to facotry spec's or refuse to do the work. Yea, I know, does not make sense to me either. kwg

I would send it back to Ruger and ask them to fix it. Also, there is an occasional problem with the gas block not being torqued correctly and it will cause the rifle to shoot left or right of center. This reqires the gas block screws to be loosened and the gas blcok recentered and torqued...

I have never seen a factory 10 rounder for the Mini 30. Another good opportunity passed up by Ruger. So much potential only to be ignored by Ruger. kwg

The early 580 series Mini's had the skinny barrel. My guess is Ruger used up the stock of skinny barrels before going to the new barrels. All 581 rifles have the new barrel. kwg
