Results with water in the stock

So I guess it's fair to say that there IS improvement in accuracy with this simple modification. I may test further, but I am pleased enough that I don't want to spend any more at the range on this one...I have laser sights to dial-in on some AR's next, and then a new .308 to tweak!

Results with water in the stock

OK, as promised, got shooting in with the 10/22 modified for holding water inside the stock  Upon range trials we found that the extra weight/volume caused a POI shift from last week's dry shots, so adjustment of the scope was needed....after sighting/zeroing it in @ 25 yds. (you...

Why seal the buttplate on the tupperware stock?

Factory tapered barrel/factory black stock. No barrel band as it was free-floated. I'm going to go back with clean play sand in the stock to see if any further tightening can be done in the groups (and go out to 100 yds. as well). I'm fairly pleased, especially since it's off-the-shelf, cheap...

Why seal the buttplate on the tupperware stock?

Note: 4 shot and 3 shot groups First days baseline tests. Empty stock and grip. Remington THUNDERBOLT 40 gr. LRN 50 yd. target range. Epoxy filled forend/bedded receiver/Kidd Single Stage Trigger group. 7 mph crosswind

    Bedding Release Agents

hah! I'm just experimenting with stuff. Not everyone can afford the change to buy the shelf products. Sometimes, you may have free stuff already that you don't even know works just as well as 'store bought' (as we used to say). Besides, if you don't buy the 'full package' and just have Devcon...

    Bedding Release Agents

Well, this batch of results are in. Both Moly Grease and Oleo are too slick to stick. KIWI took a small, sharp 'pop' with a blunt tool to pop off. Armor-All/Olive Oil/WD-40 Silicone took a really good whack to break bond. So for my money, Moly grease is da bomb, unless you have some left over...

    Bedding Release Agents

9 hours...the JB is still barely soft on top. Pushed each one on the side. MOLY moved immediately. OLEOMARGARINE moved slightly. All others remain well stuck. More in the AM when I can lift and check all of them.

    Bedding Release Agents

Finally getting around to bedding my rifles...thought it might be useful to have a thread devoted to 'testing' various ones out. I know everyone has a favorite, but how do they stack up? And, Hey! who can afford to use the rifle for a test subject? I'm testing out JB Weld today. Utilizing a 1" x...

Why seal the buttplate on the tupperware stock?

Uh...not so gtx. The barrel and action act as one piece. They both vibrate along the entire length. The oscillations have the greatest potential for movement at the very end of the barrel (which is why bullet POIs move). You can bed the whole barrel, but critics of that argue that it only...

Why seal the buttplate on the tupperware stock?

While I appreciate your thoughts gentlemen, I think it better to actually find out. I have believed many things that turned out to be at least partially incorrect. Mass helps with recoil (harder to move heavier stuff). Density enables better wave propagation...that is why sound travels much...

Why seal the buttplate on the tupperware stock?

Although my 10/22 is accurate enough out-of-the-box, it seems fun to grab for more 'free' accuracy. My preference for sand over lead is simply that lead balls only touch a miniscule amount. The vibrations only move effectively where the balls touch, not in the surrounding airspaces. Sand, while...

Why seal the buttplate on the tupperware stock?

Because...Ok, actually for a couple of reasons...air doesn't transmit/absorb vibration as effectively as other substances. Lead shot has more air volume (in between the pellets) than tiny grains of sand would. Although the lead would be more dense, have more mass I think the air volume would...

Why seal the buttplate on the tupperware stock?

I planned on doing the basic stuff everyone does to any stock, regardless of the stock's cost...Trigger improvement, buffer bolt, bedding, and free-floating. Once that's done I start shot testing with common ammo and add in sand to the stock until I get best groups. I'll probably try water as...

Why seal the buttplate on the tupperware stock?

 Ok, I know I'll get flack for this but...I'm taking a typical synthetic 10/22 stock, with the factory barrel and modding it. What? everyone's already done that...OK, who's filled the stock and grip with sand? Why would you do that? Look, I know I can drop a lot of $$$ on a Kidd or other...

    Removing buttplate on tupperware stocks

OK, I have my own answer...The buttstock has a ridge (similar to the receiver and trigger guard ridges) about 5/8" inside the stock. The buttplate is not flat, but a cup shape and the bottom edges are glued to the ridge. The gluing is poor and not continuous, but because of the cup you cannot...
