45 Colt Cylinders on Blackhawks OM vs, NM

It is my understanding that Ruger gets long rods from the steel mill via rail car, this is what they machine cylinders out of. It is heat treated at the factory, but I must truthfully say, it is VERY inconsistent! Hardness varies greatly, and there seems to be absolutely no rhyme or reason to...

45 Colt Cylinders on Blackhawks OM vs, NM

OP, call Ruger customer service! If that gun was a convertible, Ruger will replace the missing 45 Colt cylinder, usually at no charge to you.

I do not have a .447" reamer, and I just go by the math that I laid out, you have a little wiggle room in the neck using .430" boolits with .445" necks.

Click on the big "D" over to the left and then choose "start conversation" that will send a PM if I am not mistaken! Yep common with the Ruger 44-40s. Usually the neck in the chambers is .445" so you then subtract 2x your case wall thickness, let's say they are .007" so .445" - .014" = .431"...

NM Blackhawk; cylinder radial play, how to fix it?

^^^^^^THIS.... If you tighten the Ruger cylinder, without throats being line bored to the barrel, it will either wear the forcing cone on one side more than in the center, and it may just shoot itself loose again despite your attempts to get it to lock up like a S&W, The cylinder is brought...

Shooting Cast Bullets In The 480 Ruger - A Fix For Ringing

Well, they cleaned house at the forum and I just now got back on. In response to the angle, Ruger never intended on users shooting cast bullets or boolits in the 480. It is chambered for the sides of the jacketed bullet to go snugly into the throat so it is held in alignment for firing. This...

    40 S&W cylinder to 38-40?

Also check the gap at the recoil shield. If it's more than .060" it won't headspace on the rim.

    forcing cone questions

The purpose of the forcing cone is not to "funnel" the bullet into the barrel, it is there so if the bullet hits it on one side more than the other, it will cause the cylinder to rotate to be in better alignment with the centerline of the bore so the bullet enters the barrel concentric. The...

Thoughts on .45 Colt & .45 ACP Convertibles

Now that Ruger doesn't offer nor will they fit a second cylinder to the gun unless it left the factory as a convertible, one must be more resourceful if one wants a convertible. I bought a NM Vaquero 45 Colt and wanted another cylinder so I bought a NM Flattop Blackhawk convertible and...

Is cylinder reaming necessary for average shooter?

Look into renting the forcing cone cutter kit from 4D rentals, they have a really well done video showing how to install and use the cutter. Anyone with enough mechanical skills to replace a battery in a car can so this. Cut until it feels smooth, then LOOK OFTEN to make sure you don't go too...

    Cylinder reaming 45 Colt

In a perfect world, a revolver's bullet is sized .001" to .002" greater than groove diameter, cylinder throats are sized .0005" to .001" greater than bullet diameter. This arrangement works in all calibers and all makes, cast or jacketed. If you use a reamer, the single most important factor...

how to tell difference between old/new model cylinders?

I think Dan is referring to the difference between the old model 3 screw and the new model made from 1973 onward. There is also the New Model Flattop Blackhawk and New Model Vaquero which are medium framed guns with smaller cylinders than the older full size "New Models." The medium frame new...
