Hi all, I am a new member.
I have a 1950 vintage Mark 1 that I have a couple questions about that I need to show in a few pictures. Does anyone know a member who is knowledgeable with the Mark 1 history who wouldn't mind me sending them a few pictures and questions? Thanks !

Welcome to the forum! (y)

I've moved this to the Rimfire section for you.
Just post your pics here and ask all the questions you want.
Many here have lots of info about these.
I am NOT one of them. ;)

Here are some pics. My questions are about the grips and the rear sight. Did some Mark 1 with 1950 serial numbers ( mine is 10140) leave the factory with "black eagle" grip. Also, is the rear sight on my pistol a factory sight? Any help with these questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, did my pictures come through?
I believe I am miss calling my pistol as a "Mark 1" as I believe it is a "Standard"
Yes, beautiful pics.
Yes, Standard. Its common for folks to call the Standard a MKI and vice versa.

Welcome to the board!

You have a Type VI Red Eagle and it should have the red eagle grips. The site looks like a homemade affair. Also, I believe they were still using bolts that were not blued yet. Here's a pic of mine to show you the correct type grips, site, and bolt.

Nice pictures very nice gun, wrong grips they are later hard rubber ,with the black eagles, and the rear sight appears to have been "files" at an angle both front and rear ,maybe even a "made up" one to fit the early dovetail,,,which is narrower that all the following models...yours is considered the type VI variation of the red eagles, has the newer features of the bolt (recoil spring support added) and I believe it shoukd be "in the white"?? yours is blued at the back half??? Chad may have something to say or add???and the ejection port is tapered ( sculpted) both ends, and the barrel should have the 'flat' muzzle crown....your gun was made in November of 1950.....again , NIce gun find a sight and proper red eagle grips, can even just "repaint" the color from black to red................better close, than "wrong".....after all it IS a "red eagle" RST-4(y)

Note the red eagle grips artic pictured above are the early version, escutcheon around the screws, yours are not, nor should be....and his bolt is closer to what yours should be,,,again, it can be fixed quite easy, and simply remove the bluing, can be done in a bath of navel jelly or rust remover and re-oiled.....make 'er 'proper' looking.;)

Good catch those real early 'escutcheon' style grips were ONLY on the type 1 and type II red eagles.......real hard to fine and quite pricy.......
Oh and also note the safety button is larger on your gun that the early ones, this occurred in the early #9,000 range, type V series......;)

The things said above are correct. But one other thing I noticed is that the bolt stop pin is also not original. The top should be square with a flat chamfer around the edge - not a rounded top with a flat.

If the OP wants to, how hard to make it look "factory" again?

Good idea on the factory letter.
I have a GP100 that shows a 13 year lag from manufacture date to ship date.

parts are parts , and as we can see someone went to the bother of modifying the rear sight and the bolt does NOT correspond to Chads variations noted in the book, as well as their pictures......sooo who knows when ANY of the "noted" features are when shipped or done later and by who ( whom)......also his serial number is pretty close to the "changes" from type V to type VI, an early type VI...yes a letter helps with the actual ship date, BUT NOT the "parts".....doubt they shipped a red eagle with black grips as they occurred so much later, but if returned, who knows what updates happened...NO factory service records ever told any of this sadly and from that date , the players are ALL "gone"............and no we never made any rear sight look like that in all the years we serviced or refinished ANY Ruger, since the 1960's.......:cool:;)

Wow, thanks everyone! Great information from all. I will get hold of Ruger and see if I can get a letter.
Does anyone one know someone who might have the proper sight or grips they would be willing to sell?
I was born in 1950 , still have my Marlin Mountie 22 I got when I was 14. I like old quality.
