I have a 1969 Ruger m77 flat bolt 308 that has a short 19 or 20 in barrel that has a recessed muzzle crown very similar to my Rem 700 mountain rifle. Was this ever done at factory in that early of a time or done by a gunsmith ?, Got from original owner who was quite an older gentleman said not shortened. Has regular red pad tang safety stock.- Any help is much appreciated.

Barrel on Ruger was 20 in. Measured with cleaning rod on closed chamber on right. Barrel on left was 280 Rem stainless 700 mountain rifle 22 In Barrel. Below pictures are on top 1969 308 Ruger flat bolt 20 in barrel - On Bottom 1971 30-06 RS Hollow Bolt.22 In. barrel.

Ruger77Fan,

Never seen nor heard of a crown like that on a flat bolt being factory. Note: I am NOT a Ruger expert, just my own experience/observation.

My flat bolt .30-06 has a "regular" crown as does my 7 Mag RS hollow bolt.

Yes I am leaning that way also. The only recessed crown is the 243 Varmint I have ever seen on a m77. it does appear to be original pre safety warning barrel. Was hoping someone for sure knows. I guess the original crown could have been bad although if guy just wanted shorter seems like a lot of work for two inches shorter barrel.
